District officials confirmed to CBS7 last Friday that the Crane Independent School District has seen 20 cases of the sexually transmitted disease in its high school, adding that letters have also been sent to the district's junior high school as a precaution.
The station estimates 1 in 15 students at the school has contracted chlamydia.
It's predictably a HuffPo piece--that terminates with a related link to a Santorum article histrionically titled "GOP's War On Sex"--that focuses on a hardscrabble town in West TX with a pop. under 3200 residents with a margin of error outbreak and that "emphasizes"--HuffPo's words and God forbid--abstinence in order to avoid a disease.
Meanwhile in NYC the teen preganancy rate (and doubtless its STD rate) has fluctuated between 1 in 10, and 1 in 14 since 2001:
"Between 2001 and 2011, city efforts have led to a decline in the teen pregnancy rate in New York City from 98.7 pregnancies per 1,000 females to 69.2 pregnancies per 1,000 females."
From what I read in that article, the school may have a policy of only teaching 'abstinence', but that does not mean that the students have 'taken the pledge' to do so.
They would've been better off showing the kids those gory STD pics in sex-ed classes like I had to sit through in school. Then handing out condoms. An ex boyfriend of mine stayed a virgin by choice until he was 24 because the pictures in school scared him so bad. Hahaha.
People are going to have sex; may as well equip them with some information about the risks, safety and possible consequences beforehand. Schools need to stop ignoring the giant elephant in the room and preaching abstinence. It'll never work.. it goes against nature..

Don't have sex, don't get STDs or pregnant.
Guess *******s haven't looked at the STD and pregnancy rates of public schools that have full blown sex-ed programs.
That wouldn't be nearly as amusing as looking at Conservitards who think 'Abstinence ONLY' is going to prevent STDs and pregnancy among hormone driven teens.
Abstinence-Only Texas High School Hit By Chlamydia Outbreak; 1 In 15 Students Affected
Here's what I'd like to see...
A big public rally with lots of media coverage where the leading advocates of "abstinence only" can offer testimony on their own abstinence experiences.
Why is the school getting involved in the private lives of minors?
