I saw trending on facebook, John Oliver was criticizing America's lack of paid maternity leave. What encourages Europeans (in particular) to leave their countries and come to the United States simply to criticize it?

I don't think I've ever heard of an American going to France, getting work as a talk show host, and criticizing their country for say, failing to integrate that country's immigrant population.

Or in John Oliver's case, how many Americans have gone to the UK and talked about how, if the UK was a state, it would rank just above West Virginia in terms of per capita GDP adjusted for purchasing power parity?

It's just fascinating how everyone seems to have an opinion for the US.

Do you one better, we have American POLITICIANS who go to other countries and insult them. Mitt Romney is the first that comes to mind, but I believe it happened with another presidential hopeful recently in the UK - I just can't remember who it was.

John Oliver is a political satirist. I assume he brings his satire wherever he goes. I don't know if we have Americans who are talking heads on the BBC, but one could imagine they would criticize the UK as well. It's kind of their job.

They are free to express their opinions but I do feel if all you're doing is complaining, go back to where you came from. I say the same to Americans that criticize our country and think other countries are special. I have looked into leaving and going to other countries and I have the financial resources to do so but so far, I haven't found any place better for the long haul.

OP, do you have a problem with the truth about the U.S.? Is that why you start a thread attacking the messenger?

Of course, here on P&OC, we have dozens of RWNJ threads criticizing President Obama for not telling other countries how to run their governments. In fact, most of the basis for the "Kenyan Muslim" smear is that he doesn't say enough bad things about Muslims. "He doesn't tell Muslims to stop beheading people, so that must mean he loves Muslims!"

Wish you righties would make up your minds. It's so confusing to keep up with the rank hypocrisy.

Europeans have been bashing the US since 1776. The whole independence/democracy thing was an insult to their basic cultural values so they endlessly prophesied it's failure and continue to criticize almost everything the US does even when we're saving their backsides. It's jealousy and pique because the US has done so well.

I think if one looks at Greece; one sees the results of big government who creates no GDP and destroys enterprises that produce it. I don't think its loss o the vast majority.it take investing that monies to get growth and GDP in the private markets.

Paid maternity leave? In the UK they don't have fundamental things like the First Amendment for example. Why don't they complain about that?

I wish the United States were a bit more like the UK myself.

Since the past few decades America only attracts 3rd world countries basically and very few Europeans like to settle here (especially permanently) unless they seek "Hollywood" type of lifestyle, marrying rich people and living the "American" dream without realizing how difficult it is and few only obtain that.

Sorry but America is far from the greatest country in the world especially for lower and middle class people. Northern and Western Europe in general offer better quality of life and more safety in terms of economy, YES, due to socialism.
