I am really torn. On the one hand I think the death penalty is for the victims and society in general.
It gives the victims finality and allows society NOT to have to support the animal for a life time. Or deal with endless legal wrangling
The death penalty is also imho a deterrent.
On the other I do think life in prison probably is something as a society we need to do. Not only for the people who could be wrongly killed but also to bring humanity higher.
I just hope a prison guard does an "Epstein" for this guy -- and soon.
Don't hold any hopes Tsarnaev will commit suicide. The cells are designed to prevent it.
And the guards sure won't help him; the job is boring in a SuperMax, but the pay is good. The SuperMax has the most coveted jobs in the Colorado prison system, and the SuperMax is only one small prison in the Florence complex. There are 3 others that are larger in it.
The SuperMax was deliberately created to be the worst, most scary place a violent criminal could imagine. A place that is very literally worse than death to the guys who don't fear death.
It's worked very well. Most of the prisoners in the SuperMax are eventually released back into a general-population unit in the Florence complex, and they all come out fearing the SuperMax.
There have been lawsuits over the prison, but the lawsuits only changed the imprisonment just enough to meet the rule of law. They had to add some heat to the cellblocks in the winter, a few other small things, and that was all.
I see this every time there's a major case like this. We go all out going after these animals, and if you bring up due process, you're yelled at with "THINK OF THE VICTIMS!!!!11!!1!" and other such things. I support due process for everyone at every step, to ensure these animals don't get let out on appeal. Didn't happen here fortunately, but it sounds like it was close. A juror with a pre-existing, and obvious bias? That could be grounds at least for a re-trial if not outright dismissal with double jeopardy invoked. Due process for the accused ensures justice for the victims!
I am against the death penalty purely on cost reasons. Takes too long and costs too much from trial, to housing, appeals, sentence carried out. LWOP is cheaper.

Or that a life sentence is a deterrent either. Nothing wrong with an eye foe an eye. IF he's guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, death is a fitting punishment.
