Nevada is probably the most libertarian state politically, and it's a terrible place to live in general, as far as the economy, for children, and for people in general. The state has poor services, generally low wages, an undiversified economy, and high crime.
If libertarianism was such a good ideology America's best schools, lowest poverty and crime rates, best medical care and most diversified and healthy economy would be in the state of Nevada but they aren't.
We don't even come close to scoring in the top five. We are number 20. There are 19 states that are more libertarian than us. This is the biggest thread fail I have seen in a long time.

What the heck kind of non sequitur question is this? Might as well ask, "if elephants are so smart, why is their skin grey?" Huh?
There's a very good reason for that. Individual pioneers claimed all the territory that wasn't waste land, so the government got the rest through default.
Nevada isn't the only state in the west where that happened. There's plenty of real estate out here that will starve a lizard that no one wants.
Because it's still Nevada. Political ideology is irrelevant when it's barren with nothing going for it except the one-trick pony that is Las Vegas.
[yeah, I said it]
Pretty much this.
I find it really strange that people tie economic performance to ideology while ignoring things like resources, location, etc. Vice has some sort of value but aside from that it's really hard to profit from an empty desert.
You can say the same thing about Oklahoma, yet it's not libertarian. Instead, it's far Christian right. If you compared quality of life statistics between Oklahoma and Nevada, probably Oklahoma would be the worse state.
Eh, what?
First, Oklahoma is not a "bad place to live". I've lived in several states, I prefer Oklahoma by far(and so do you).
Secondly, low wages are only important as a comparison of different things. I mean, wages are higher in New York City, but so is the cost-of-living. Oklahoma is one-of the cheapest places to live in the entire country.
I always thought of it like; Lets pretend you are poor, and you knew you would always be poor, where would you want to live?
It is certainly true that New York City has a lot of "Services". But those services come at a cost. Everything is ridiculously expensive there. Would you rather be poor in New York City? Would you rather be poor in New Orleans? Would you rather be poor in Washington D.C.? Would you rather be poor in Dallas? Or San Antonio? Or Detroit? Or Cleveland? Or Las Vegas? Etc.
With that said, I think Oklahoma is going downhill, and fast. Too many immigrants, not only from outside the country, but from within the country as well. The economy has been pretty good here for quite some time, compared to much of the rest of the country. So we've been attracting scumbags from all over the place.
And I really hate seeing Texas license plates in my state.
With that said, you don't really want to turn Oklahoma/City into New York/City. Or at least, you want all the good things that come with that kind of economic model, and none of the bad. The problem is that you have to take the bad with the good. And there is a whole lot of bad that comes with New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Houston, Amsterdam, etc.
With as big a staunch "union" supporter as you are, and a liberal to boot. You have to realize that the United States is controlled by economic interests, not the people. And it is the same regardless of which state you are in.
It is certainly true that unions did transfer more of the power back to the people, prior to their heavy decline in the 1970's and 1980's. But unions were destroyed by the same policies that liberals consistently advocate.
The quest for "progress", largely translates into "economic growth". And this obsession with economic growth is exactly why the government has empowered corporations, and continues to favor them through tax-breaks(for international competitiveness), as well as either direct subsidies, or through an indirect subsidy(such as offloading the cost of roads onto the public, or having government support research and development, which helps corporations and offloads the cost of research onto the public), or through a variety of protectionist regulations, as well as the huge economic benefits for both finance and for corporations, which comes from the existence of the Federal Reserve.
And I don't want to get started on how open-immigration destroys unions. And it always has(which is why unions have historically been so opposed to immigration).
If you look at the heyday of unions, it lasted from the 30's until the mid 60's and early 70's. Why? Because in the 1930's, we closed immigration nearly completely because of the Great Depression. And we didn't open it back up until the mid 1960's.
Basically, liberals continue to support policies which cause the very things that they hate. The problems that you loathe, were actually caused by the government, and the government can't fix them. Don't be deluded into believing otherwise.

Good link! Note that the bottom five least libertarian states are NY, NJ, RI, CA, and Maryland. All 5 seem to be problem-ridden. All are in the bottom half of states in unemployment rate except MD, which is barely in the top half at #25. All have high crime and poverty.

I first thought you were describing all the Liberal Democrat controlled hell holes like Detroit and Baltimore.
Liberal hell holes are more likely to have what I have bolded. Wonder why
FWIW - The Federal Government spends far more in Nevada than it collects in taxes. From my point of view as a citizen in a state that pays more then it collects that makes Nevada like many of the western and mid western states nothing but welfare collectors.
The real problem with Nevada is it is dependent on government welfare in the form of subsidized grazing and water rights and its primary source of income from casinos is a dying industry mostly controlled by criminals.
