And yes, a buffer requires LOTS of ground troops. Ground troops are expensive.

You CANNOT use American tax payer money to extract and sell oil. That's socialism and it's out of the question. Don't even think about it, it will never fly. Both parties will call for your head. So forget how much money the oil will fetch, that's not money for you to make. All you can get is the price for the mining rights.

Oil prices are at all time low. The mining rights are at all time low. The cost of using ground troops to safeguard the territory for the X number of years to completely extract oil will cost MORE than the money you get from selling the rights.

Okay, how are you going to solve this conundrum. You're up. Go.
.
I thought a buffer would be cheaper. I didn't know troops were so expensive to hire.

I guess no working it out haha.

"officials in Iran estimate that Iran's annual oil and gas revenues could reach $250 billion by 2015." from wikipedia.
$1.7 trillion total spent on Iraq war since 2013, divided by 10 for the number of years, 170 billion per year.

Net profit - 80 billion dollars, and also from a previous enemy.

But they say the Iraq war could cost up to 6 trillion after benefits to war veterans and interest.

80 billion per year probably not worth the deaths of soldiers.

Maybe this is why I'm not pres LOL

Great idea. You should run on that platform. No. 18 is the charm.

On second thought, we (I mean "you") should invade every country in this world and take chit from them. They won't even fight back because we (I mean "you") are so friggin' awesome!

I bolded that part that bugs me most. What sort of arrogance is that?

Just because you live in that country doesn't mean you get its resources. Which, to be fair, Europeans showed up in America with that same logic. And we generally don't see that in such a great light these days.

Iran's oil is Iran's. The only way to change that is to invade and claim the space that was once Iran as US territory, which is illegal.

If I were president, I'd let the Middle East deal with the Middle East.

You could win the GOP nomination, talking nonsense like that.

So, when does your campaign start?

This is a good example of why we need more sophisticated minds in leadership positions - minds that can grasp the nuanced complexity of tumultuous situations. We already bumbled through 2 wars with this cowboy attitude. Diplomacy is a much better approach to keep control of our enemies.
