I'm a fan of representative government. A one party state can't effectively do that.
I can understand why you think you like Representative government. But if you think about it for a minute, you should really ask yourself, "Why would anyone actually like representative government?"

Exactly, politics is largely a sideshow, it is theater. Politics gives us the illusion that we are actually in control, that our opinions really matter, and that we decide the issues. People don't seem to realize that their opinions are actually fed to them through endless media propaganda and "party-politics"(I like to call politics a "team-sport", pick a side and defend your team regardless of what happens).

And this isn't something new. When Alexis DeTocqueville came to America 200 years ago, he said this, "In the United States, the majority undertakes to supply a multitude of ready-made opinions for the use of individuals, who are thus relieved from the necessity of forming opinions of their own.

Which reminds me of a quote by H.L. Mencken....

"I have seen many theoretical objections to democracy, and sometimes urge them with such heat that it probably goes beyond the bound of sound taste, but I am thoroughly convinced, nonetheless, that the democratic nations are happier than any other. The United States today, indeed, is probably the happiest the world has ever seen. Taxes are high, but they are still well within the means of the taxpayer: he could pay twice as much and still survive. The laws are innumerable and idiotic, but only prisoners in the penitentiaries and persons under religious vows ever obey them. The country is governed by rogues, but there is no general dislike of rogues: on the contrary, they are esteemed and envied. Best of all, the people have the pleasant feeling that they can make improvements at any time they want to— . . . in other words, they are happy. Democracy is a sort of laughing gas. It will not cure anything, perhaps, but it unquestionably stops the pain."

He wrote that nearly 100 years ago.

The truth is, democracy sucks, it doesn't cure anything. The only virtue of democracy, is that it gives the appearance of legitimacy. As long as in our minds our government seems legitimate, then we accept it. We stop fighting it. We cooperate with the people around us, and are productive. In our system, power appears to transfer hands, even though both parties are basically the same. And most people don't realize that the real power is behind the scenes.

As long as they continue to be oblivious to what is going on, then they are happy. The internet has made us more educated, but it hasn't made us happier.

In that sense, government is sort of like religion. Religion makes you happy, even though religion requires the suspension of logic. The same goes for government. If you trust your government, you tend to be happier, but what kind of delusional person would ever trust their government?

Basically, being delusional makes you happy. Sometimes I wish I was delusional.

Apparently you forgot that Democrats lost two presidential elections in a row back in 2000 and 2004. Were they "dying" then too?

We will find out.

The stumbling, bumbling, wimpy Phonycons are just fading out of the picture........won't take long.

The monstrous, corrupt, totally-insane Red-Diaper-Party will be worse than Herr Shicklgruber without his tweak.

The problems facing our economy are mostly created by the fact that the corporate socialists and crony capitalists make the rules for both of the existing political parties. Neither party is willing or able to rest real control from the corporate PAC's that pay for the campaigns. Spending serious money on both parties is a very good investment. Just ask Monsanto.

Yes, the United States would be better off. That is, the state and the politically connected would be...not the individuals it rules over.

The problem is we are already a ONE PARTY state. The Democrats and the Republicans are merely the left and right wings of the American Mammon Party. The corporatists call the tune and both parties do the dance. Effectively 99% of us are already disenfranchised.

1. We are already in a one party state. There is not a dime's bit of difference between the average democrat and republican (see Boehner and McConnel).

2. Most of the representatives in Congess, the Senate, and the presidency are interested in lining thier own pockets, rather than helping the nation.

3. Given #2, most politicians ignore pressing problems and kick the can down the road.

4. The republicans are not "extinct"- they have just become democrats.

5. Repression of dissention, as occurs in a single party, totalitarian state can and is destroying the nation. Witness the violent, knee jerk reactions from the left (every democrat and most of the republicans) to every idea proposed by the Tea Party.

6. The trajectory of the US, since the nation has moved more and more to the left, has been:
a. associated with lower incomes
b. associated with higher poverty rates
c. associated with an increase in the number of unemployed
d. associated with an increase rise in food stamps and dependence on federal housing
e. toward reduction in individual liberties
f. a loss of the middle class and US manufacturing

Yes- A one party state is terrible- we are living in one
