I told the story in the first chapter of my 2014 book The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan: how Richard Nixon invented the cult of the “POW/MIA” in order to justify the carnage in Vietnam in a way that rendered the United States as its sole victim.

Talk about a BS article here. The headline is a lie: there was NO talk about "racism" in the main post.

Well, POWs did fall rather short of expectations as it is, at least if you're listening to a certain GOP candidate...

Default Newsweek calls POW/MIA flag racist

POW/MIA Flag -- Newsweek Writer Calls for Removal | National Review Online

The leftist are truly insane. This guy obviously hates USA and our nation's military. You hate the USA involvement in the civil war in Vietnam, fine. There are good logical arguments one can make against our involvement in that war. But don't take out that hate on those who didn't have anything to do with the decision to go to war. Not everyone who was against the war lived close enough to escape to Canada, were big enough celebrity that they could merely refuse to be drafted, nor rich enough to get out of the draft through various means.

In 2010, Newsweek said on its cover, "We Are All Socialists Now":

Unbelievable !!! I really can't see anyone jumping on this bandwagon...although with the way the majority of our society is now I guess nothing should be surprising.

I don't know why the Newsweek article leads with 'racist' - it's just link bait.
I believe the author was calling it racist because the MIA flag vilifies the North Vietnamese when most of the prisoner torture was conducted by our allies the South Vietnamese.
The article stands on its own without the racist link bait and lead in.

The point of the article is that MIA was made up by Nixon to get support for the war.

It’s Time to Haul Down Another Flag of Racist Hate - Newsweek

"Downed pilots whose bodies were not recovered—which, in the dense jungle of a place like Vietnam meant most pilots—had once been classified “Killed in Action/Body Unrecovered.”

During the Nixon years, the Pentagon moved them into a newly invented “Missing in Action” column. That proved convenient, for, after years of playing down the existence of American prisoners in Vietnam, in 1969, the new president suddenly decided to play them up.

He declared their treatment, and the enemy’s refusal to provide a list of their names, violations of the Geneva Conventions—the better to paint the North Vietnamese as uniquely cruel and inhumane.

[After the war] the league and its flag had become the Pentagon’s own Frankenstein’s monster.

Allen describes how Vietnam’s “refusal” to “account for” a thousand phantoms became an impediment to reconciliation and diplomatic recognition between the two nations.

When symbols are the primary target, it is no longer a war but a cleanup operation. Thus, their victim identity needs to end.

I often wear a T-shirt with the POW/MIA flag on it.

I also live in an "open carry" state.

I can hardly wait for someone to tell me not to wear my shirt.
