Two people become legally bound to each other until one dies or a court of law rules the contract terminated.

Something like half of all marriages end in court.

Many formerly married people end up hating each other.

Ex spouses turn their kids against their ex and the kids are emotionally damaged from the turmoil.

Usually when you get married you're pretty young and really don't have a clue what real life is like.

Many guys get married because they think they will have all the sex they want afterward.

After 10 or 20 years, pretty much every married person finds out how messed up marriage really is.

So why is this allegedly wonderful union of two people seen as being so sacred?

I think the history of this has its roots way back in pagan times, when people - usually in spring - had all-night celebrations in the fields, encouraging the fields to be fruitful by, um, being fruitful in the fields themselves. So people began to think of sex/marriage as something sacred.

It is a way of publically proclaiming to the world ( andyour god) your union. The government should have no say about it and a license is ridiculous.

It's not! A good 50% end in divorce, and that includes all the holier-than-thou religious types. Even that lunatic clerk in Kentucky making a big stink about marriage was divorced like 3 or 4 times.

Marriage is sacred. Your examples reflect the flaws of human nature, not marriage.

Marriage is only as sacred as you make it.

Mine is a top priority to me, and I don't care about the government's approval.

It's simple, men and women make babies, who then go on to become children, and our next generation of doctors, lawyers, scientists, plumbers etc...

Our next future generation of citizens is the single most important thing to any growing society or nation. As flawed as human beings are, and as much as so many people fail at maintaining long term personal relationships, we have not found a better system than the foundation of marriage to raise that next generation.

Marriage is "sacred" because our future is sacred, and the children born to parents are that future.

The reason there is a license is to make sure people are compatible to procreate. This is why we require blood work to get the license. Also, the reason to give additional benefits to married (less now than in the past) couples is to expand the population through procreation. A civilization needs to multiply in order to expand the economy.

I'm not going to get into the dismal numbers of divorce, but I will say it has a lot to do with removing the hoops that couples used to jump through in order to get a divorce. Vows are meaningless if the law doesn't take them seriously as well. Divorce on demand has made it far too easy to shirk ones responsibility. It's tearing apart the traditional family structure which helped to make this country the greatest nation in the world.

The consequence of so-called progression.

Blood work?

The only thing my government was interested in was the fee.

Marriage is not sacred, it's just a piece of paper.
