My daughter went to school with a Pakistani girl. When that girl was in the 7th grade, she came to school one day wearing an engagement ring. It seems her parents arranged for her to get engaged to a man in Pakistan that she never met. When the school year ended, the family sold their Halal store and was gone from the community. I asked around, as did my daughter, and no one knew where they went. I have a sick feeling that they moved back to Pakistan and forced her and her 2 sisters into marriages.
I got to know this girl as I volunteered in the elementary school when she and my daughter were students. To this day, I wonder about her and if she is okay.

You might want to catch up with the news of all the expats leaving Ecuador. At least those who can afford to leave; some say they are stuck there. Many disagree with your assessment of quality of life, healthcare, housing and the cost of living. It wasn't utopia after all. If you are there and loving it...good for you!

In some cultures, they force adult women to marry adult men that they hardly know. Are you outraged about that? That's no better as far as i'm concerned. But at the end of the day, it's their culture and i'm (and you're) unaffected by it.
So, child abuse is ok if it is someone's culture? It is never ok, and the world should be outraged.
