It's about time we closed GITMO, the cost is over $1M per prisoner. If no where else federal prisons would be a good choice. It would be a win-win for SC and Kansas, maybe some job creation and funding and these detainess probably are no worse than the prisoners already in residence.

Time to close the upscale Gulag

In hopes that it can persuade Congress to drop its prohibition on transferring detainees in Guantanamo to American soil, the White House is hunting for a highly secure place in the U.S. for some 50 detainees. Labeled as "enemy combatants," they've been held for more than a decade without trial in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, at a camp President Obama has promised to close.

"It's that population that we need to find a place to detain," Defense Secretary Ash Carter said last week. "And if it's not Gitmo, then it's gotta be somewhere else. And so we need to get on with the task of finding that 'somewhere else.' "
That "somewhere else" could be military prisons at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, which the Pentagon surveyed this month; officials also plan to examine Charleston, S.C., as an option. It's brought an angry response from Republican politicians — and local residents as well.

The problem with putting them in prisons in the U.S. is that they would be imprisoned without a trial. Would we really want our government to imprison people without trial? It is against the Constitution and would resemble what was done by Hitler, Stalin, Sadam Hussien, etc.

They are non-combatant war military captives and not law enforcement criminals. They have no civilian legal status. Certain we should look at that cost level as they are not motel guest. thiose entering combat without uniforms were subject to firing squads I other wars. They have no combatant status.

Why, pray tell, would we put these animals in prisons on US soil? Gitmo works just fine and risks fewer American lives in their care and feeding.

i don't understand the pros and cons associated with maintaining GITMO, beyond cost.

The net is bursting with contradictory data.

One source claims that the number of prisoners have decreased from a peak of 779 to 122, yet the military and civilian infrastructure remains the same. It went so far as to claim an almost one for one healthcare worker to prisoner ratio.

They should be left in Guanatanamo.

And it is not just these two states, it is virtually every Democrat in Congress that is also taking this same position. They want GITMO closed, but they do not support moving these hardened terrorists to the US mainland.

One million per prisoner.... per year? Per day? Gotta link?

Second, GITMO is no "gulag". We built a soccer field for these animals. They are well fed with Imam approved food. They don't do any hard labor. At all. Ever. Kids in Middle School have it worse.

The best solution would be the 50 cent solution. For the price of a single bullet we could reduce the detention cost of a prisoner in GITMO to zero.

I think the major concern is that once they hit American soil they actually have the right to a trial. Something I am not adverse too. If they've done something they should be tried, and punishment specified. If not, hand them over to their native country for disposition. We kept too many actually innocent people, and radicalized them. The ones that remain have been there for over a decade in many cases. And even worse is that some have been cleared for release....

Heres a example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaker_Aamer

Wow...the wiki page has some disturbing pieces of information.....a 14 yr old spent 2 years in gitmo? Whoa.

Lots of deaths in custody, torture allegations etc.

And some examples of people that really really need to be there as well. Or dead.

So yeah, Gitmo is a mess, and we are a worse nation for not resolving it long ago.

I was off a little, I have also seen numbers over $3M but that may include the transport of legal help back and forth.

So you want to kill someone that hasn't received a trial.

Anyway this makes no sense, fiscally or otherwise.

For fiscal year 2014, the total cost of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility is $397 million, according to a Department of Defense report drafted for the Senate Intelligence Committee. This includes money spent on maintenance, personnel, contracted work, military commissions and Department of Defense-funded studies.
Spread out among the 155 people detained over the course of 2014, that’s $2.6 million per detainee.
