I realize this is a difficult concept for you to grasp but does the phrase "existential threat" mean anything to you? Does the fact that you don't see American out proudly sawing people's heads off in job lots mean anything to you? Does the fact that you don't see Americans out burning people alive in significant numbers mean anything to you? Does the fact that you don't see Americans out enslaving very large numbers of women as sexual toys mean anything to you? Probably your answer to every question would be No because you are a leftist and your principle purpose in life is to criticize and degrade Americans.
I see. So murder by gun is acceptable but burning isn't. One murder is preferable over another. You should be more worried about your own backyard. You're more likely to be a victim of crime by your fellow citizen than by some brown skinned boogie man. Don't they say you're more likely to be hit by lightning than killed by a terrorist?
Republicans and the NRA, who buy the way owns all Republicans, want a boogie man who is someone other than an American with guns.
I'm a Republican who has never shot a gun in his life, but that doesn't fit into the bogus "Liberal Umbrella of Stereotyping" so I can't fault you for not believing me.
Anyway, my answer to the question is that the threat of mass casualties in random places at unknown times serves as a scary thing for our country to face. There are plenty of police to concentrate on areas where "American on American crime" takes place. We aren't "not focusing" on domestic crime, we're just engaged in preventing another kind while we focus on what we've always done. Plus, as was posted earlier, crime is down to levels it hasn't been at in decades but this day and age people are enamored with murders, police shootings, "racial tension", etc that anytime a newsworthy crime event does take place, it's reported and debated and blah blah blah and it creates the perception that this country has some massive crime problem.
Not focusing on ISIS would be irresponsible to Americans everywhere.

Thats the REAL issue. The reality is the vast majority of Americans are killed by other Americans not foreign terrorists, that's what we need to be focusing on. Every day Americans are killed and I don't see our people protesting about that in the streets why is that? Why are our politicians not talking about murders here? Why don't their lives matter? Do American lives only matter when killed by radical extremists from other countries? I need someone to explain this to me

The red bold above is not included in your linked article. FWIW Chicago actually has a low crime rate and has not been considered amongst the "most dangerous cities" listings for years.
Also it is St. Louis not St. Luis and even their crime and Baltimore's has fallen.
On the OP, people want to have an enemy. In regards to domestic crime, black people are their enemy they blame. For any other crimes around the world they blame the Muslims. All the while all these "crazy" white guys go around shooting up kids and clinics and movie theaters and no one thinks white guys are "terrorists" or have a "culture of violence."
Of course we need to be diligent to stop crime in the USA but if you are in Baltimore, if they gonna kill each other, give them space to do it.
Have you forgotten about the 3000 killed on 911 and there is a desire and capability to kill millions on the part of ISIS...if they set off a nuke in NYC, you would be asking why didn't we focus more on ISIS?
We kill over 10,000 a year here with wide-open access to guns. Why aren't we addressing that issue?
