Russia has the largest concentration of Muslims in Europe, about 15% of the population. This is twice the size of the Muslim population in France.
Depends on how Fanatical are they? I know they killed many of the people held hostage in a Colosseum back in the 90s. Russia vs the Muslims of their country? Might be more than they can handle.
Syria is a client state, but Assad's fall has less to do with him being a client than him being the regime that can keep a radical Islamic state from forming near the Russian border.
Then I suggest that you and Sec Gates peruse a map of the middle-east because Syria doesn't border Russia. If the concern is a radical Islamic state, then perhaps Russia should reconsider attacking the fragile but diverse Syrian opposition because it wasn't the radical Muslim who sparked the revolution against Assad.

As I said in my previous post, Russia doesn't let terrorists dictate policy. You seem far more worried about it than they are.
Russia will not stay in Syria for very long. They can't afford it right now, thanks to the Western sanctions. If Putin tried to stay in for very long, many Russians would die, and terror attacks may take place in the homeland. The country would go bankrupt, and his approval ratings would decline sharply. It's not in Putin's best interest.
However, it may be in Obama's. Perhaps he planned for this whole thing, so that Russia would no longer be a threat?
The Russian military does not have to pay Halliburton $100 per gallon of gas. Also, despite of all the media attention, the campaign is actually very small in scale, so the money should not be a problem. Russian blood will be the problem, as the terrorist will find Russian targets much easier to destroy than American ones.
I wouldn't worry about Putin. Unlike Obama they know how to deal with terrorists & hostage takers. This concerns an event where the Arab terrorists took some Russians hostage.

The US has intervened for less cause, I find it hard to believe that anyone would think Russia should not have any concern about a radical Islamic state forming near its border.
