WASHINGTON -- Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Portland) introduced a bill on Wednesday that would prevent taxpayers from paying the high cost of the month-long Oregon refuge occupation and place the burden on the armed group of protesters.

The occupation has cost state and local law enforcement an estimated $100,000 per week, Blumenauer's spokeswoman said in a news release.

The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice to quickly reimburse law enforcement for the costs, and then allow the U.S. Attorney General to bring a civil suit against the occupiers to recover the government's cost.

Removing the debris and repairing the damage is likely to take until early summer. Until then, the headquarters remains closed but the public is free to roam the rest of the 187,700-acre bird sanctuary.

Ashe said the occupation will cost his agency roughly $6 million. About $2 million of that came during the takeover and included paying to move the refuge's 17 employees out of town for safety to live at government expense in hotels for weeks.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service released new photos from the scene of the 41-day standoff at a wildlife refuge in eastern Oregon, showing that protesters left behind trashed buildings, damaged facilities, a compromised septic system and government offices with missing possessions.

Didn't the Yeehawdist's claim that they were taking great care of the refuge and even improving it? I guess they were lying about that too.

They did, the damage was done by the holdouts after the Bundys were arrested.

Were you there? It seems to me that the extensive damage took few more people and a lot more time to accomplish.

I guess you missed this. It was recorded by David Frey after the Bundys were arrested. He documents the state of the barracks after everyone left, saying that after the arrests, "People so scared didn't even pack their stuff. Thought feds were coming to kill everyone. Waco style."

The four pathetic holdouts didn't do all of that damage and create all of that mess by themselves. They had the help of a whole bunch of "patriots," you know, all those "good stewards of the land," Ammon and Ryan Bundy included.

To judge by the state of their camp, as documented by themselves on FB, they have a pretty different definition of "taking care" than most of us do.

I hope they can collect it. No way taxpayers should have to foot this bill. What a bunch of sorry jackasses. Also hope the can collect all the back rent for grazing on public lands that the Bundy's felt they didn't have to pay.

Cowardly and despicable acts.

While I agree with you that I do not want my tax money going to foot the bill, it is for a different reason. Nowhere in the Constitution does it permit the federal government to spend money on this.
