I looked up her stance against guns and it's not 100% clear to me what she plans on doing.
an all out ban on assault rifles would mean a LOT of jobs lost in this country. and since more people are murdered with pistols, how will she reconcile this?

You are right, Trump is not a lunatic. Trump is an idiot. And no she will not ban assault weapons. She is only playing to her base like Republicans do all the time.
Assault rifles have the perception of being more dangerous. When Clinton voices support for banning them, it makes the people who think they're bad happy so they might vote for her. It doesn't matter if they aren't more dangerous. They're perceived as being such, and since there is no argument that they are needed for self defense, many support a ban.
I'm not one of them. I don't disagree, an assault rifle is definitely not needed, nor even best suited, for self defense. But, rifles as a whole make up, I think, ~4% of gun related homicides. That's any sort of rifle, meaning assault rifle is probably a significantly smaller number than 4%. From what I know, most people who even own them are just gun enthusiasts who like to collect them and shoot cans in their back yard with their buddies anyway. Banning assault rifles is just a way to get support though. Even if she's unsuccessful, she just needs to make it appear she cares about the issue.
