There is no criminal investigation of Trump, this is a civil suit.

If there was any evidence of criminal wrongdoing, it would have already been turned over to law enforcement.

Anyway, at this point what difference does it make? The documents are out and you can't suppress them. The Clinton campaign will continue to release damning evidence over the next month regardless and Trump will continue to be reduced to hurling racial slurs to defend himself.
I'm sure he has insurance.

I think this story is, at best, a distraction. Settling makes him look weak and like he did something wrong.

Damages automatically triple if found guilty on the RICO fraud charge. The NY case estimates Trump U had $40+ million revenue - then triple it. I don't know what happens at a criminal level if RICO fraud is found in a civil case.

Which is exactly why he should have settled it before he announced. Like his advisors recommended.

Now, it will be used as fodder against him.

Trump's not stupid, he will settle, there's not way he'll risk the bad publicity if he loses the lawsuit, if he wins the election this year it would considerably damage his reelection campaign in 2020. In the end the lawsuit itself won't hurt Trump much. Trumps unnecessary remarks will hurt Trump, which makes be beg the question, why is he running his mouth off on this, it wasn't much of an issue until Trump started talking about it. A jury isn't going to look at Trump University favorably and Trump would be in an uphill battle to win a case right after either winning or losing the presidential elections. Do we really want a president embattled in a lawsuit? Either civil or criminal? No thanks...

Does Trump have the right to settle these lawsuits privately, in a way that no mention of a settlement would be made public? In other words, could we hear one day that these lawsuits have been dropped with no explanation given?

If he can get in power fast enough, he can control the DOJ and have all his people take the 5th and "lose" records.

It worked for the current administration, and I don't see it changing.
