I've seen many who love the question or difficulty defining assault weapons, in particular when it comes to banning the sale of such weapons. Occurs to me that one definition is any weapon that allows one person to do what this nut-with-a-gun did in Florida, though it seems he had more than just an AR-15...

ORLANDO, Fla. — A gunman killed 50 people and wounded 53 in a crowded gay nightclub in Orlando early Sunday, officials said, in the worst mass shooting slaughter in American history, and law enforcement officials called it an act of terrorism.

The gunman was Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, 29, an American citizen living in Port St. Lucie, Fla., federal law enforcement officials said.

The killer stormed the Pulse nightclub armed with an AR-15-style assault rifle

Question: What is an "assault weapon"?

Answer: A made up, Orwellian style term geared to sway opinion.

Truly? Something illegal to own unless you have an ffl and pay the tax.

However many refer to 'scary looking' guns, like an ar15, as an assault rifle. They aren't as assault rifles are fully automatic and clearly outlined in the 1934 bill.

An assault weapon is a gun that has characteristics of a military style weapon.
The AR15 is a terrific rifle that has many accessories and is used primarily by millions of responsible gun owners in target shooting.
The AR15 is a copy of the military grade M16. The AR is a semi auto where the M16 has an option for full auto. Semi auto means you have to pull the trigger each time you want to fire. Full auto means you can pull the trigger once and the gun will fire until the magazine is empty.

In the aftermath of this shooting there will no doubt be calls to ban those "icky black guns" (from the lawabiding that is) but what people forget is there are actually more powerful rifles on the market already. They don't look as scary so they don't get the negative press.

Some of these terrorists are pretty bad at picking weapons. A pump 12 pretty much never runs out of ammo since you can single feed it from an ammo pouch all day long. No magazine to mess with. It's simply the weapon of choice, a term glamorized by the media.

The AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle.

What is an assault weapon?

This has been explained to you MANY time on other "gun" threads.

Either you are unable to learn or just stubborn.

An assault weapon is generally a semi-automatic firearm, with a detachable magazine and a pistol grip. Not to be confused with an assault rifle which is defined as military style weapons, with selective fire options.

Assault rifle has a pretty straightforward and agreed upon definition. Assault weapon can be defined differently depending on where you are. It's also exclusively a legal term, whereas assault rifle is an official classification for a firearm.

An AR-15 can be legally classified as an assault weapon, but it is not an assault rifle.

"Assault Weapon" term is basically a made up name for scary black guns.

"Assault Rifles" are machine guns and were banned for ownership by the general public in 1986 and you still can't buy one without very hard to get special permits.

Note that the AR-15 is not a machine gun and by definition not an "Assault Rifle"
