The role of government in this area is to educate and inform based on empirical data. That is it.
As long as they receive benefits as a result of the consequences of their actions, they should most certainly be compelled to pay for it. We are paying for their life choices now, so they should pay as well.

When are "progressives" going to learn that when the cost of business goes up, that extra cost just gets passed on to the consumer and raises the cost of living for the common man?

It doesn't matter whether we're talking about a coercive "sin" tax, a minimum wage hike, or whatever other "redistribution of wealth" scheme they cook up, it's never going to punish those evil rich CEOs because they are never going to eat the cost and take in lower profits to absorb the cost.

This is a good case study in economics for all the Bernie Sanders types out there.
Wrong.

Myth: Any new corporate taxes will just get passed on to consumers
Often, if taxes are raised (or other costs go up) for businesses, the owners say that they will just raise prices and pass the costs on to their customers.
This claim is often accepted as fact because many people don't know about "elasticity of demand".

Furthermore I don;t drink much soda but when I do I'm being penalized for it.

When I was kid there was both high and low dive at the local swimming pool. They were "taxed" out of existence because of the actions of some people. Where does this end?

It's a penny and a half per ounce. Must be a pretty damn big soda OP must be drinking to double the price.. oh wait! It's fake Propghanda news from your corporate conservative warlords.

Also that sticker shock story from CBS is outdated. Shoprite, one of our major grocery chains, mistakenly marked a bunch of products with the tax.

Or you could just put the flavored seltzer water in the cooler and at the front of the store.

LOL at Trump supporters that are against a 7% tax on a cheap item like soda. Yet they are ok with a 35% tax (tariff) on large items like cars and equipment and PCs on everyone in the USA. The 35% tariff is going to cost people thousands of dollars due to increased prices in everything we purchase.

I prefer to be referred to as your conservative overlord instead of warlord.

If it makes it easier, you can refer to me as Your Highness.

That's $1 on a 2 liter soda, on sale I can buy a 2 liter coke for $1. If I bought cheap soda the tax would be more than the soda.

Here is question I have for you food police people, when do we begin the crack down on food stamp recipients? Soda is their number one purchase.

True. And the midwest is going to pay for it as Midwestern farm products and Midwestern car companies will be banned from foreign markets like China.
