I think it's a symptom of a larger problem.

Women generally (certainly not always) end up single mothers because the guy abandons her once he finds out she's pregnant.

Looking at the votes, virtually everyone thinks that single motherhood is a huge problem in today's society. I have two questions:

1) Why isn't there policies in place that discourage, instead of encourage, single motherhood?

2) Only a couple of decades ago, it used to be ashamed for anyone who's a single mother (exception is widows), but now, people are proudly and loudly say "I am a single mom!" like they are supposed to get an award for it. What happened?

We don't want to hurt single moms' feelings.

How about policies that discourage deadbeat fatherhood too?

Neither do I. However, I've known a lot of women who ended up pregnant, and the guy bolted (at least until the women got an abortion).

In fact, when it came to unmarried friends, especially if the guy they got pregnant by was under 30, that was pretty much the rule, not the exception.

Now obviously pregnancy is a risk of sex, but both parties are responsible for the outcome. Can't just curse the women for raising the baby as a single mother when she didn't ask for the guy to bail.

Be careful about pointing your finger at one gender or another. It doesn't solve the problem.

People of both genders react to incentives and disincentives built into systems. Women are more-likely to be single-mothers, because to a large extent, it is actually beneficial to be a single-mother. The only exception would be the handful of ambitious career women.

From the perspective of the mother, there is very-little downside to becoming a single-parent. There are numerous benefits, and tax credits, among other things, especially if you're poor.

The people who suffer, are the children. But even worse, a child being raised by a single-parent, in most cases becomes a single-parent themselves. Why? Because girls raised by single-mothers, in the vast-majority of cases develop what people often call "daddy issues", and are far more-likely to have been sexually-assaulted(often by the mother's many boyfriends).

Girls with daddy issues, tend to be easily taken advantage-of by "pushy" men. Because they tend to be insecure and weak-willed, and there is no one at home to protect them.

Coincidentally, the most-pushy men also tend to be the biggest idiots. Generally criminals and other low-lifes. These guys with no job, no assets, and no prospects, don't care if some girl they're banging gets pregnant, because it isn't as if they have anything to lose, she can't exactly garnish his non-existent wages for child support. They'll claim to have a latex allergy and go balls-deep every time.

While at the same time, the "good men" are so terrified of a girl getting pregnant, that they often don't even want to date a girl, because they can't trust women not to lie about birth control, poke a hole in a condom, or otherwise entrap them and their high-incomes and assets, into paying alimony and child-support, after she no-fault divorces you after cheating on you with some idiot, claiming you neglected her by working too much.

This doesn't even take into-account something called "youth culture", which is a byproduct of the public-education system. Whereby school-aged people, tend to overvalue superficial qualities, such as being the tough-guy fighter, or the jock, or being a rebellious stoner. Because they spend the first 18-25 years of their lives surrounded by other children who don't work, and are taken care-of by mommy and daddy.

And there is nothing you can do about it, because the moment you begin criticizing single-mothers, every politician and every media pundit, will say you hate women, or even that you hate children. Democracy is a form of "class-warfare", which turns men against women for votes.

There is no solving it, Americans are idiots, it is only going to get worse.
