While American Republican politicians deny Climate Change, and while City Data Conservatives publish charts, graphs and photographs to prove that our planet is actually getting colder, not warmer, the Russians are opening shipping channels through the Northwest Passage and building military installations inside the Arctic Circle. The Economic and Militarial aspects of this are huge, but are being ignored because to address them would mean also addressing that which cannot be spoken of. So we continue to send our container ships south around Panama and the Russians will send their goods north through Alaska. It shouldn't take a genius to see the huge savings in fuel that will result. As Capitalists are we not supposed to be more than a little concerned about the bottom line implications of all this denial?

Science corrects itself all the time. That's what makes it better than other types of thinking, like political or religious, which rarely change views unless they really have to. Climate change is the theory that has been settled on because it is simply a more understandable statement. There is more heat energy in the atmosphere, so global warming is still technically what's happening. But more heat energy does not necessarily always lead to warmer temperatures, which is why global cooling was originally a concern. In reality, weather patterns are simply going to get less predicable and climates less stable.

But that's scientific literacy in this country. A single "error" (calling it an error is frankly pretty ambitious) casts doubt on an entire field of study.

I've always wondered whatever happened to that penguin on the cover of Time. I bet the mainstream libs captured him and put him in a safe space.
