Reagan Embraced Free Trade and Immigration | Cato Institute

From that link:

Quote:
Reagan’s heart and head were clearly on the side of free trade. While president, he declared in 1986: “Our trade policy rests firmly on the foundation of free and open markets. I recognize … the inescapable conclusion that all of history has taught: The freer the flow of world trade, the stronger the tides of human progress and peace among nations.”

Free trade is one thing. Trading with countries that have incompatible economic systems, or interests in undermining the US economy is not free trade. It's just plain stupid.

Aside from that, the world is a very different place than it was when Reagan was president. We've already bled away a huge portion of our domestic capacity. We've nearly lost entire industries, and it will take a full generation of hard work, maybe more, to restore them, should the need arise.

We are past the point of negotiating "free trade". Now, we must reverse the damage caused by stupid politicians who signed unfair and unbalanced trade agreements. Having thrown the US worker under the bus for so long, it will take many many years to restore trust and faith in the US system on their end as well.

The US squandered it's wealth for too long. Then tried to get fat off a communist system that most American's don't like, agree with or want. Basically, politicians and corporations set the US consumer/worker up to fail. Very stupid.

The origins of NAFTA, the conception, right there.

Too bad we do not have a Reagan today to put the idiotic protectionists like Trump in their place.

The strength of the USD and US lifestyle makes the US uncompetitive in the global market for most consumer products.

The US continues to dominate with cars, weapons and commercial aircraft. The weapon thing is augmented with foreign military aid. The US borrows money to give to another country to pay for weapons from US manufacturers.

Boeing's future and 60 jobs are dependent on commercial business from China. The French must be quite excited to hear that the US might mess with China because that means more business for Airbus.

Mexico maintains more free trade agreement with other countries than any other country. There are reasons why German and US auto manufacturers have had plants in Mexico for decades.

There is a huge disconnect between what Trump says and does. All of his, his daughter's and wife's consumer products are made offshore, China, Mexico, Vietnam and Bangladesh where the average wage is .33/ hr. and the concept of childhood does not exist.

Hopefully, at least on trade, that would continue if Trump becomes President.

Milton Friedman:

Quote:
It is often said that bad economic policy reflects disagreement among the experts; that if all economists gave the same advice, economic policy would be good. Economists often do disagree, but that has not been true with respect to international trade. Ever since Adam Smith there has been virtual unanimity among economists, whatever their ideological position on other issues, that international free trade is in the best interests of trading countries and of the world.

To be fair to Trump that is what you have to do in order to compete.

It is sad when you compare Reagan with Trump to see how far the Republican Party has fallen.

Trade agreements need to be win-win. Not win-lose for the American Middle Class.

As you know, it is not just Republicans but many Americans from all stripes against Trade with Slave Labor Countries and Rigged Governments.

It is not just the lower class effected by these policies.
The Globalist Unfair Trade Policies as they are now will actually help increase the numbers against it as more and more people's livelihoods become effected by it

You can count on it

Globalists VS Americans

WHAT the wealthy globalists will brainwash the majority Americans with, as they get richer from these policies, is: Americans need to cut back, reduce, downsize, live many to a home, work for less pay for more hours and so on.

They will preach that but not take some of their own medicine and cut their own pay, no, their pay will increase from it all.
