Property rights have taken an obvious big hit. Zoning did not exist 200 years ago, it barely existed in rudimentary form 100 years ago in a few places, today it is everywhere. A willing property owner could sell you enough land to build a small house, if you couldn't afford a large house. Today we have minimum lot sizes, putting property ownership out of reach of 100 million Americans. We have policies for slow growth, smart growth, and even no growth, plus Urban Growth Boundaries.
