Mods: I am not sure if this belongs here or in the Political forum.

I am a liberal but I can't see how one justifies allowing this to happen and if one does allow it, then where does it stop?

"A group of black California college students requested that they only live with people of color in a Facebook post that has since gone viral and sparked a national debate about racism and safe spaces at US universities.
Three students at Claremont colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate liberal arts schools in southern California, recently posted that they were searching for a fourth roommate in an off-campus house and added “POC only” to the listing, referring to people of color.
The Claremont Independent, a student magazine, published an article on Tuesday about the housing request and ensuing online debate, with the headline “STUDENTS AT CLAREMONT COLLEGES REFUSE TO LIVE WITH WHITE PEOPLE”.

Interesting - I can just imagine if three white students had posted that they only wanted a white roommate how that would have went over.

It's not a college dorm, it's a private home. They can choose whomever they want to live with. Like all-Black fraternities or sororities. Or single-sex residences.

If these were WHITE kids they would be expelled for being Racist. Does "Double Standard" ring a bell?

I think the reaction to white students placing would have been different as well.

Perhaps some white students should place such an ad and see what happens next.

The relevant question is what would the reaction be if white students advertised that they wanted only a white room mate in a private home? Would it face a different standard of scrutiny and different standard as to acceptability?

I think it speaks to a larger problem of bigotry and racism even if we take it at face value. What about the community makes it so people are only comfortable with others not from a particular group? Otoh, this happens all the time without being so direct. Kids get off campus housing, post to craigslist/fb, and then filter out which ever groups they don't want to live with post ad.

The students who posted the ad have received death threats and face scrutiny about being racist, how is that different than what would happen were they white?

As for those claiming the school should or would do something if these were not black students, keep in mind this is a private off campus house.

I'm sure a similar flap would be generated. It sounds like the current case is getting plenty of publicity and uproar. What more do you want?

Not quite right. There is a limited exception to housing discrimination laws

CA Civil Code 12927(a)(2)(A)
Refusal to rent or lease a portion of an owner-occupied single-family house to a person as a roomer or boarder living within the household, provided that no more than one roomer or boarder is to live within the household, and the owner complies with subdivision (c) of Section 12955, which prohibits discriminatory notices, statements, and advertisements.

The situation is a group of college roommates. Not an owner looking for a lone roommate.

And, as stated, in no case can any advertisement, whether written or oral, contain any discrimination

CA Civil Code 12955(c).
For any person to make, print, or publish, or cause to be made, printed, or published any notice, statement, or advertisement, with respect to the sale or rental of a housing accommodation that indicates any preference, limitation, or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, ancestry, familial status, source of income, disability, or genetic information or an intention to make that preference, limitation, or discrimination.

This is a clear violation of 2 statutes. Do not expect any charges though as racism against whites is accepted by society.

No, it's not; those only apply to owner-occupied houses.
