Until the 1985 Supreme Court case of Tennessee v. Garner, American police generally had the right to shoot a “fleeing felon,” including looters.

Now we give them "space"

The morning after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, Mayor Eugene Schmitz put up notices all over town warning that:

"The Federal Troops, the members of the Regular Police Force and all Special Police Officers have been authorized by me to KILL any and all persons found engaged in Looting or in the Commission of Any Other Crime."

In December, 1913, the San Antonio River overflowed, and there was serious flooding in central Texas. The order issued to the state police was, “Shoot all looters, and shoot to kill.”

There was another famous “shoot to kill” order in 1977, after flooding in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. When Mayor Herb Pfuhl heard reports of looting he told police to kill looters, and as soon as the word got out, the looting stopped. FBI director Clarence Kelly defended the order

Even if police do not have the right to shoot looters after tennessee vs garner, property owners do. Few people remember that Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of Mississippi, but there was very little looting. Governor Haley Barbour explained why: “The reason, I think, was because I said people could shoot looters. I think it was a real deterrent.” Mississippi does not have restrictive gun ownership laws, and many citizens are armed.

We should of course arrest and possibly shoot looters depending on what is going on, but tolerance for ignorance is way over done in America.

Citizens use to shoot looters as well. When were the LA riots, early 90s? Not that long ago.

But here is the funny thing, shooting looters would cause more looters since these looters usually start when a protest about a black man is made. See the irony! LOL

lol. I see your point but the day citizens start taking the law into their own hands or we actually start electing real men and law order candidates instead of wimpy democrats and republicans and get rid of a justice system that protects thugs more than law abiding people, there will be less thugs. Change a welfare state that creates thugs and makes single motherhood more economically beneficial than two parent homes

Basically you have a very weak response in charlotte and baltimore and it made it worse. Giving people "space" and just firing pepper spray and weak tear gas does nothing

It makes no sense to give them space. We'll never recover the money for what they damage so once again the burden is on the taxpayers.

I don't think the Korean shopkeepers shot many looters, but the sight of them, weapons in hand, on the roof of their stores was enough to convince the looters to go for easier pickings elsewhere.

Our society has become very soft and think that tolerance will solve all the issues. There is a right and wrong way to protest. Burning, looting, rioting is the wrong way and should be dealt with in a quick and forceful manner. These protestors are nothing more than terrorists. They cause a huge monetary loss and also the loss of life and injury. They are nothing more than domestic terrorists. I believe our police and national guard should be allowed to use any means necessary to maintain law and order.
The irony of these protests is that there has been approximately 238 blacks killed by police. The number of whites killed by police is almost twice that number. While these blacks protesters are so concerned with the
blacks killed by police 511 blacks were killed by blacks in Chicago alone. It appears blacks have no problem with black on black murders but are willing to riot over the police simply doing their job.
Perhaps the way to give blacks what they want is to suspend police services in black neighborhoods and end all car stops of black occupied vehicles.

Looters and rioters should be shot on sight.

It's kind of happening already. Cops pretty much standing by in Baltimore since the riots. Wonder how the crime rate is doing?

We used to do a lot of things - that doesn't mean they were the right things to do.

There are plenty of ways police could stop rioting without shooting anyone. And they should resort to such measures to stop them.

Chicago was one of the cities hit the hardest by riots and arson after Martin Luther King was murdered, and twenty plus years later there were still gutted buildings that had been torched and left.

And keep in mind that these rabble-rousers are being transported from other places to start all of this mayhem. They have zero investment or interest in the communities they go to.

You're blaming the wrong people. Blame George Soros and the sock puppets he owns. These riots are meant to cause civil unrest and be divisive, and that approach is working.
