The Libertarian presidential nominee was asked by MSNBC's Chris Matthews during a town hall forum to name his "favorite foreign leader."

"I'm talking about living. You gotta do this. Anywhere, any continent. Canada, Mexico, Europe, over there, Asia, South America, Africa. Name a foreign leader that you respect," Matthews said.
Johnson, still struggling to answer the question, offered: "I guess I'm having an Aleppo moment ... the former president of Mexico."

Who is your favorite/most respected foreign leader?

I like Merkel & Hollande.

Johnson is such a doofus. You'd think he'd know the names of a couple, as they'd be his peers if (by some crazy miracle) he got into office. I'll admit to not knowing the names of many of the world's leaders, but I could come up with four or five to choose from.

I'm kind of partial to that fat guy who runs Korea, what's his name? PolPot? And that fat guy in the congo. Actually the best leader recently was Bruton of Ireland. But then he's my cousin.

There are no libertarian leaders that is why he had such a hard time. I can't remember the name of the Mexican president who was key to getting NAFTA through either but I am betting that is who he was talking about.

Googled it: Carlos Salinas de Gortari

My guess is that he's referring to Vicente Fox, who was considered a reformer and who since leaving office has advocated legalizing weed. Fox was Mexican president when Johnson was governor of New Mexico so he would have met Fox in border summits.

The closest thing to a libertarian foreign leader would be John Key of New Zealand.
