I think the regular people did want Democracy and the ability to vote in their leaders. It was the old guard leadership that wants total control.

Hilldebeast and co have to rethink their ME strategy. Assad and the Syrians are going to be around for a long time to come. Russia is there in force and there to stay. They are also building ties with Egypt and Turkey. China is taking an interest in Syria also . It's been a failure of epic proportions so far for the US and will go down in history as such.
