Even if it was, did it really justify the level of retaliation? From what I read LBJ was more interested in puffing up his image as being tough on COMMUNISM! than he was believing Vietnam represented any kind of threat to our country.

Dollars to donuts many here take no fun from that fact.

Absolutely correct sir or mam.

I chose Reagan only because he was the first President I voted for, and my mom who worked in the defense industry was almost laid off because of Carter.

I was too young to say JFK and not alive for Ike, but I would place both of them right up there on their historical merits.

JFK was most likely murdered because he was going to get the hell of Viet Nam. Johnson and Nixon were absolute horrors... in that order.

JFK. I often wonder what would have happened had Kennedy not been shot. He was very inspirational, making strides in the area of civil rights, founded the Peace Corps, kicked off the race to the moon and stood for democracy around the world.
I know a lot of people idolize Reagan. Personally, I think he talked a big game but really didn't do much concretely to help the country. At the time, however, that's just what we needed - a cheerleader of sorts to lift us out of the malaise of the 70s.

I disagreed with many of their politics, but you could not criticize them for not being respectable holders of the office. (North clearly took the fall for Iran-Contra...but all presidencies have their dirty laundry).
"...unlike the current nominee.."
Are you talking about Trump or Hillary?
Or were you referring to Obama, and if so, what has he done that is not respectful of the office?

I don't disagree with the first part of your statement; both Reagan and HW Bush were honorable men. Bush (the Elder) in particular I believe should be lumped with Truman as Presidents who were unpopular and seen as failures in their day, but in hindsight we can really appreciate the great job they did.

Or is it just that you have no real answer.

My point is that historically, conservatives are just as happy to grow government and spend $$$ as liberals when it suits their agenda. Despite all claims to the contrary.
It is the ole guns and butter division. Reagan spent on guns (defense). The evil empire could not keep up. Thus we had ten years of prosperity between the Cold War and the War on Terror.

My favorite is Ronald Reagan since he helped spread conservatism across the country. He was anti-Union and helped dissolve the USSR.
He was also instrumental in beginning the dissolution of the middle class that Truman and Eisenhower had spent years building (the unions were a large factor in the rise of the MC), and was the prime mover in having Social Security payments taxed and beginning a redistribution of wealth from taxpayers to the top 1%. The military grew 40% under Reagan to help him avoid the Great Recession that finally caught up with W. The government under Reagan didn't do quite so well - it only grew 15% while he was in office.

Big Government pols are the ones who want to canonize him. Those of us who remember his presidency live in fear that someone like him will be elected again.

I agree with this. Bush the elder deserved a second term. But a mild recession and a lackluster re-election campaign did him in.
