I'm sure the issue started with his clothing. There are tons of fake veterans out there. It is nice Chili's and other places give these "thank you" meals but let's be real, they do it to get positive publicity and warm fuzzy feelings towards their establishment. When these type of ugly encounters hit social media it backfires and accomplishes the exact opposite, which will end up in less and less places doing this. My husband is a retired combat veteran, he would never dream of creating this type of scene. They ask every person who requests the free meal for proof.
By the way, I don't doubt for a minute what we saw taped was a result of events not recorded that took place prior. And, if I had to venture to guess what happened, the "service dog" was not behaving as a service dog should, which is why they packed up his free meal. But, rest assured, the manager will probably be fired.
That's because he has class and respect. He fought for the county because he felt it was an honor and duty and didn't expect or ask for anything personal out of it such as free meals or attention. Those are the Hallmarks of true patriots.
As for this clown and his attention seeking entitlement attitude, well whats the old saying, you take someone out of the entitlement ghetto but you can't take the entitlement ghetto out of them.
I think this is just a misunderstanding. To me, a simple DD214 is good enough. But in this case, like oldhag1 stated, this veteran did not wear his uniform correctly. Maybe this is why the chilli guy was confused.
I am glad chilli corrected the mistake, but it is a mistake / misunderstanding. I doubt it is discrimination.
This is just another story for the media to try and cause more racial divide. If people don't see this well than they're not paying attention.
They're just chomping at the bit for civil unrest. They were almost gleeful on CNN with the protests.

What a great way to denigrate the over 180,000 veterans who accepted a free meal from Chili's last Friday.
This wouldn't be on the news if it was a white veteran. Not saying the guy didn't get screwed...I'm just saying it's big news because it seems "racist" and is an excuse to blame something on a Trump supporter.
If the shoe fits...
Let's look at the evidence shall we.
The guy that made the complaint approached the black veteran (not vice versa) and stated that when he served, blacks were not allowed to serve.
The guy that made the complaint was wearing a Trump shirt.
Leaves me to wonder: if the black veteran had been white, would the guy in the Trump shirt have even noticed him.

And yet the older veteran didn't approach him and state that there was something wrong with his clothing.
He did ultimately complain that no "real veteran would wear his hat indoors" but all that was said directly to this man concerned his skin color.

How old is this guy that complained? The military did away with segregation before the Korean War.
If I was Chili's senior management, I'd stop offering free meals to veterans immediately. While it is a nice gesture to support the military, no good deed goes unpunished.
Anything can trigger an unwanted lawsuit. Why bother with the hassle of bad publicity from one sided accounts of an incident like this one in the press? Best to be neutral to all customers.
Sadly, this is a likely outcome, along with some other companies not wanting to be in the same situation. Everyone seems to be forgetting that Chili's doesn't owe this guy a meal.

Yes they do. When they put out the offer of a free meal to any vet, then they owe all vets a free meal. Very simple.
