Just when you thought it couldn't get any more insane, heeeere's CA!

"Thought you were smart by cutting cable? Not so fast.
In a move sure to be emulated by other cities, Pasadena’s finance department decided Thursday to apply a 9.4 percent tax on “video services” like Netflix, HBO Go and Hulu. Subscribers to these popular streaming providers will see their bills on each service jump as of Jan. 1."

I'm confused. Is there already a sales tax on this? And this is a tax in addition to it?

My Netflix already went up to $23/month, I get 2 dvds at a time & streaming. Big deal. It's still a deal compared to the scam that is cable. Considering how much I use Netflix, its basically a steal.

A couple of threads somewhere on this board discuss California's most recent attempts to legally secede from the US.

Cities taxing everything that moves might be one of the reasons so many Americans support those efforts.

(Psst: Pay attention, Chicago...)

Not a sales tax, it is some stupid usage fee type of thing you see on a bill. A lot of states already do this on Video on Demand services with cable companies (try ordering a VoD movie and watch how much some states charge you for a "service" fee), now it looks like CA is trying to move it to the Internet. All they are going to do is push people into pirating sites.

People need to wake up and get VERY angry with these stupid states/cities, but most people are so ignorant and lazy, nothing will come of it. The only power the people have against the government is when they are united against it, which is why government constantly seeks to keep the people divided.

Someone has to pay for supporting a "sanctuary city".

I think it would help if people knew what exactly the fees are for. The people of LA just voted for Measure M, which increases their sales tax to fund local transportation infrastructure.

I'm less concerned with this than I am with what the GOP will do to net neutrality.

You shouldn`t assume that everyone hates the govt. but could you explain how the government seeks to keep people divided? The govt. is not my boogieman.

This is one of the reasons I moved to WV. The state offers very little in the way of "services" and doesn't handout exorbitant wage and compensation packages to public employees. And many cities don't even have restricted zoning.

I grew up in California.....and I can tell you that an absolutely huge number of people I went to school with have either moved out already or they're waiting just a few more years to retire and then they're gone.

With all its user fees, taxes, and strict codes and covenants, it truly is a very oppressive place. I inherited a free house there.....and I'd still never go back.
