Well it's not called ministry of truth, but functionally that's what it will be once it's up and running.

We had a "crisis" created by the government claiming that Russia tampered with the election by hacking into email accounts (which has not been proven).

This legislation was already in the works – probably waiting for an opportunity (real or fake) to add this into law. It was inserted on 12/8 into the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Official Press Release – President Signs Portman-Murphy Counter-Propaganda Bill into Law

Obama Quietly Signs The “Countering Disinformation And Propaganda Act” Into Law
Long before the “fake news” meme became a daily topic of extensive conversation on such discredited mainstream portals as CNN and WaPo, H.R. 5181 would task the Secretary of State with coordinating the Secretary of Defense, the Director of National Intelligence, and the Broadcasting Board of Governors to “establish a Center for Information Analysis and Response,” which will pinpoint sources of disinformation, analyze data, and — in true dystopic manner — ‘develop and disseminate’ “fact-based narratives” to counter effrontery propaganda.

In short, long before “fake news” became a major media topic, the US government was already planning its legally-backed crackdown on anything it would eventually label “fake news.”

And so, with the likes of WaPo having already primed the general public to equate “Russian Propaganda” with “fake news” (despite admitting after the fact their own report was essentially “fake”), while the US media has indoctrinated the public to assume that any information which is not in compliance with the official government narrative, or dares to criticize the establishment, is also “fake news” and thus falls under the “Russian propaganda” umbrella, the scene is now set for the US government to legally crack down on every media outlet that the government deems to be “foreign propaganda.”

Just like that, the US Ministry of Truth is officially born.

The official statement explains that the legislation establishes a fund to help train local journalists and provide grants and contracts to NGOs, civil society organizations, think tanks, private sector companies, media organizations, and other experts outside the U.S. government with experience in identifying and analyzing the latest trends in foreign government disinformation techniques. Seems like a simple hop, skip, and jump to add in "domestic" disinformation as well.

The Senators responsible... U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.).

It would seem that he has had the idea that his presidency would be followed by Hillary getting elected. Then they destroy the voice of conservatives with this new program.

It could bite them big time if the Trump administration uses it the way that Obama or Hillary would have surely used it only flipping it to silence liberals.

If it was used against liberal media propaganda could they shut down major news papers ? Over 90 % of print media is liberal so they have the most lose and they only would have done something like this if they thought theyr would be in power.

That would be a good thing. It's about time there was a crack down on people being willing to accept lies and then happily spreading them around.

Wouldn't this violate freedom of religion rights? Cracking down on Breitbart, the alt-right bible, which is based on no provable truths?

Wrong.

When the government tells lies, who cracks down on them? The government regularly lies.

All this will do is determine which lies are permissible, and which "truth" needs to be snuffed out.

The Department of Defense (i.e., our military) recommended this language.

In the House, the bill passed with 237 Republican votes and 40 Democrat votes.

In the Senate, it passed with 48 Republican votes and 36 Democrat votes.

It's really hard to take seriously any complaints you hear from the right these days, especially when it comes from those upset with the information they are getting from anyone. This is a group of people who rely on Breitbart for the "truth", so you realize they are starting from a position of disinformation and lies.

So remember when you rely on lies for your information, the real truth will greatly upset you.
