The majority of people who get PHDs probably get it for the status associated with it. When is the last time a PHD did something useful?

Unless of course you're referring to the actual genius physics PHDs, which unfortunately are not working in the industry they've obtained their degree from, but at places like Renaissance Technology, which is an HF prop shop.
