Advertisements

Some examples where opposites got together for some type of political cooperation, for a common cause.....

Johnson - Dirksen
Reagan - O'Neil
Even Clinton - Gingrich, with impeachment looming

I even remember a TV ad with Jesse Jackson and Barry Goldwater (I admit that I forgot the contents of that ad!)

Now, these days, politics is at a level where people on all sides are becoming unhinged with anyone who holds a different belief(s)! And if their leader meets with the other side, they are ostracized!

So much for our nation's unity.....!

It's the technological age skewing perception.

4chan, Twitter, Reddit, podcasts, 24-hour cable news, etc.

More time and motivation to stir the pot.

Besides, the Burr-Hamilton duel was as personal as it gets.

Oh, snap! Burr - Hamilton......!

And I forgot the slavery debate! But that, of course, was about people's freedom and lives! But one would think that in the 21st century, politics would be at a level where it wasn't personal!

But we now have such mistrust of each other......!

I've read plenty of American political history books. But can we learn from those I mentioned who cooperated with each other.....?

May have been rough and tumble in the old days too, but I believe this is the first time that presidential candidates threw bimbos at each other in public. I'd say that's getting personal.

Addams, or rather surrogates, outed Jefferson's adventures in the slave quarters.

Others accused John Quincy Addams of being a pimp.
