Maine’s brash governor insisted that civil rights icon John Lewis needs to show white Republican presidents some appreciation for allegedly ending slavery and opposing Jim Crow laws.
Paul LePage — known for his history of crass, often offensive and sometimes racist comments — said the civil rights activist turned congressman was out of line for questioning the legitimacy of President-elect Trump’s imminent administration.
"How about John Lewis last week, criticizing the president?" LePage said Tuesday on Maine’s WVOM Radio. “John Lewis ought to look at history. It was Abraham Lincoln that freed the slaves. It was Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant that fought against Jim Crow laws.
“A simple 'thank you' would suffice,” he continued.

What alternate universe are you living in that you actually believe this? Somebody who would call this out is clearly not the kind of person who would work to end slavery. Fortunately, others were.
