When this movie came out in 2006, it was lambasted by conservatives for painting an inaccurate and stereotypical picture of their agenda. At the time, social policy was headed in a more liberal direction and the thought of something like this happening only existed in the dreams of the far religious right and the fears of the far left.
Though the movie is set in London, it was intentionally designed to mirror American politics moreso than British politics.
Today, it seems like something such as this is becoming ever more possible. Could our society be transitioning to a V-for-Vendetta style tyranny? People will say that me even posting this is fearmongering and a few people will probably call me a "snowflake." The truth is that fundamentalism, when left unchecked, has no moral limit in terms of what they would do to force their vision on the masses. We only have to look at World History to see how this has played out in other societies.
Unless something changes, our future looks to be one in which there will be increased marginalization of those who aren't straight, white, and Christian, while at the same time we will see increased nationalism and the strength of our institutions (government, religion, the military) will increase.
Howe and Strauss have a theory regarding the cycles of history called "The Four Turnings". While it isn't infallible, it's surprising how accurate it is. Here is more information about it.
Going by this theory, it definitely appears that we are currently transitioning from our societal unraveling and are approaching our next crisis. Each turning is a reaction against the preceding turning.
We see this now as we are transitioning into a society where strong institutions thrive, individualism is weakened, those considered "weak" are stigmatized (LGBT, etc), and conformity is championed. We are not there yet, but if you are familiar with this theory and look at our country today, you can see that is where we are headed. If you view the chart in the above link, many of the things listed that happen during a "crisis" are already well underway. Like all eras in history, there will be winners and losers this time around, but the United States in 2030 will look very, very different from the U.S. in 2015.
-Liberal want to control what we are allowed to say as "hate speech" and "political correctness," which are their terms for Orwell's "New Speak."
-Wikileaks reavealed that the DNC paid to have people cause violence at Trump's rallies, such as when that poor kid in San Jose had his jaw busted
-Donald Trump was the one that suffered an assasination attempt
-Libs threatend the lives of electors.
-Pro Democrat celebs are talking about blowing up the white house
-Leftists terrorists are rioting in the streets, smashing window, overturning limos, and subjecting gold star families to violence.
-Wikileaks revealed that the Dems did rig their primaries
-It is the media defending liberals and attacking Trump that have been caught giving debate questions to Hillary, talking about Trump's jet crashing, and printing fake news stories such as the dossier.
etc. etc. You can only do so much to document the truth. Violence, assasination, language control, media control, intimidation, threats...the Democratic party is increasingly a criminal organization, and I for one will support it if it becomes necessary to outlaw it.
I will oppose the Democratic party with violence, because the Democratic party opposes me with violence. Be prepared. The days of yor crying and pretending to be the victim are done.
What's funny is, as a Libertarian, I sincerely believe both democrats on the left AND republicans on the right, "when left unchecked, has (have) no moral limit in terms of what they would do to force their vision on the masses."
Seriously, when a person looks at this honestly they have to conclude that both sides want to force THEIR will, morality and dictates upon everyone else. Both sides are filled with statists who refuse to allow people to do as they choose if their action or inaction does not encroach upon the rights or property of another. Heck some openly statist folks have even found a home in the Libertarian party although they appear to have the fewest of the 3 parties. So as I see it, statism has no political boundaries.

I can safely say it has been white Christian males who have been increasingly marginalized and outright demonized in the last 20 years by social and governmental institutions...at minimum.
But go ahead and keep the SJW rhetoric flowing. Trump gains more votes for 2020 each time you do.
Signed,
A non-white, non-Christian, non-statist who isn't a Republican and who didn't vote for Trump.

But then again, that is just MY opinion, fwiw.
You do make some good points here. On the political spectrum, once you pass a certain point going either left or right, it becomes basically two sides of the same coin. Both are statists and want to force their will on everyone, they just want to do it in different ways. The left is generally more focused on economic issues and the right is more focused on religious/social issues.
There is currently no question however that the far right has a lot more influence in the GOP than the far left does in the Democratic Party.

Statism is the belief in involuntary government.
Both "sides" are authoritarian. Trying to rationalize it is futile.
It certainly highlights the danger of liberal education.
It certainly is dangerous to give young people a broad-based education, that will lead them to think more for themselves, than to follow any radical dogma. How would they be forced to support the agenda of would-be dictators?
