Even if only 1% of those users were exploited enough to actually see misleading content (often shared amongst their social circle), that is still hundred of thousands of people.
Lots of people like to pull the "I was not tricked by Facebook" - well great, good for you. Even if you somehow were never exposed to misleading and false content somewhere (there are other places on the Internet to see these content...), many other people were.
And content shared on social media is very powerful. Especially if it confirms preconceived notions and biases. We like seeing content that agrees with our world view.
Exactly right. There are a lot of gullible people out there and seniors are the most vulnerable. They don't understand the difference between fake news and real news. I roller skate with one that voted for Trump because she didn't want Sharia law taught in the schools. I kid you not, she believed this crap.
Facebook just banned Cambridge Analytical. Hmmm I wonder why? Not.

The researcher hired by Cambridge Analytica, Alexandr Kogan, told Facebook and his app’s users that he was collecting information for academic purposes, not for a political data firm owned by a wealthy conservative. Facebook did nothing to verify how the information was being used.
I never post anything on Facebook I don’t want the whole world to know about.
This. I keep politics off FB. No matter how stupid and downright false a post is. My FB is vacation stuff, humor and keeping up with hobby groups. IE Oh look my nephew got a new dog. FB rocks for that kind of stuff.
No one influenced my vote. Not Facebook, not City-Data, not Twitter, nor any "news" organization. For me, Hillary wasn't a choice I could accept for any reason, as she is a "progressive," a.k.a, "Marxist-socialist."
I believe in the Constitution as our Framers wrote it, and all the principles it stands for, meaning limited government (which we no longer have) where the powers of the Federal Government are "few and defined."
The choices of candidates we have come down to two: Liberal or conservative (however you define them). Donald Trump was clearly the best choice for me, because of his views on government, and how best to bring jobs back to America and grow the economy. His views are "Reaganesque," and he promised to "drain the swamp" (get rid of entrenched bureaucrats who hold power, a.k.a. "the Deep State"). He promised to secure the border (important if we are to remain a sovereign nation — without borders you have no nation) and end "chain migration" etc.
For me, it was a "no brainer."
I use social media to share my views, as do others. I doubt these outside influences have much of an effect. People make up their own minds.
Another reason I am glad I have no interest in being on Facebook.
How low can they go? I have a feeling this is going to be a bottomless pit.
I enjoy Facebook because I'm connected not only to family, but long time friends who are no longer near me (high school, former co-workers, others, such as our former neighbor back in San Diego) and people who are like minded whom I've met on Facebook (some are published writers and bloggers ...some well known and some not so well known), and I read their articles and interact with them. They share pieces of their personal lives and we come to know each other a bit like neighbors.
I have Facebook friends from all across the country with various backgrounds. Most, but not all, share my political views. I'm very selective about whom I choose to "friend."

Since most of my Facebook friends are politically active, we do share politics. But we also share more personal things, such as personal interests. For example, I share classical and flamenco guitarist's Youtube videos I like with my friends. They often share their favorite music as well. We also share funny stuff which we find on the Net. Everyone enjoys a good laugh.
Aside from the illegal campaign contribution, seems to be a lot of that coming to light lately, this evidence that the Mercers and the Kremlin were working together through Cambridge Analytica to influence the election is an eye opener.

You miss the point--they hacked the data..not harvested. They took it..without asking. If you think that's no big deal..OK.
Harvested, not hacked. The silly games in Facebook (like what you look like in opposite gender) ask you to agree to surrender your friend list to the application, so while you play the game, you are sending your friends information to this company.
The data is used for marketing, and apparently also in political campaigns.
The FB users should not have the authority to send other peoples data anywhere.
