Umm, he said he wanted a "global jihad". The terrorist made it into a Muslim thing, not the OP.
He's a nutjob. Born and living in Missouri, he was ousted from the US Army in 2013 because he couldn't follow directions. Nursing a grudge against the army for that, he converted to Islam and became a wannabe Jihadist. He described himself in one of his profiles as: “Zionist Jew Pig Redneck Hunting Super Assassin.”
They created the plot. They recruited him as if there was already a terror cell. The agent told him what to buy and showed him how to configure pipe bombs, a very common FBI plot like the one that ended in the World Trade Center truck bombing in 1993 after the FBI had provided them with explosives instead of inert material.

It doesn't entirely excuse Islam as a motivating factor for this moron, but it looks like he was a fight looking for a cause and Islam just happened to be the most convenient.
Any other Muslims in his family? Any evidence he attended any radical mosques or other Muslim organizations?
