"Few have focused on what this means: Trump — and the Republican party — owe the presidency to millions of whites who have largely voted Democratic for years. The implications of that for the future of the Republican party are immense"
Trump carried Michigan by winning all but eight counties, including historically Democratic places such as Saginaw, Bay, and Gogebic counties. A Republican has not carried the first two since Ronald Reagan in 1984. Gogebic, a 92 percent white county on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, hasn’t voted for the GOP since 1972.
Trump carried Wisconsin largely because he won ten white, historically Democratic counties in the southwestern part of the state that even Gore and Kerry won in their races against George W. Bush.
Trump swept Iowa by winning virtually every eastern county, places that had voted Democratic in every election since 1988. Pennsylvania’s Luzerne County last went Republican in 1988, while Ohio’s Trumbull County had been Democratic since 1972."
"It’s common to view their concerns through a purely economic lens and call them protectionist. That is largely true as far as it goes: These people have been buffeted by globalization more than most Americans and see restrictions on trade and immigration as ways to boost the number of good-paying jobs open to American workers. But that’s far from all that they want, nor does a purely economic lens capture the way they view their votes. They are best viewed through the lens of active citizenship.
They take national identity seriously and imbue Americanism with an implicit bargain that flies in the face of liberal or libertarian cosmopolitanism.
They believe that being American means more than voting and paying taxes. To them it means that if you work hard and play by the rules, the people who run the country owe it to you that you will live with dignity and respect. It became painfully obvious to these voters over the last eight years that national Democrats no longer treat them with respect or believe they are capable of living dignified lives. They have seen their way of life under assault, even implicit claims that they are bigots. For people who voted twice for President Obama, these last insinuations might have been the most offensive and damaging of all."

I could do this same thing in Wisconsin. You arent talking about Trump Democrats, but rather anti HIllary Democrats who stayed home or voted Stein or Johnson.
CNN, FOX and MSNBC are playing a narrative. They go out and find the people who switched sides, but everyone forgets about 10% switch sides each election anyways, that number wasnt greater this time around.
"The Blue Wall," was a big part of the Democrats strategy for decades, sort of like the browning of America. Many Great Lakes states have been Democratic cornerstones for decades.
Ohio?
The last time Republicans won in Wisconsin? 1984.
The last time they won Michigan? 1988.
The last time in Pennsylvania?1988.
Even Minnesota was close to changing.
The last time Minnesota went red? 1972.
Virginia, Nevada etc. and alot of blue states arent really very blue either. Legislatures,Senate and house seats, governorships have seen huge red shifts , huge change in electoral college numbers for presidency
PBS election coverage stated that in Virginia, Clinton was doing 9% better in Arlington and Fairfax Counties, but Trump was doing 13% better in the rest of the state. Implement a large downsizing of the federal workforce and VA could go back red.
It feels they should focus on the whites who voted for 3rd party candidates, Jill Stein obviously. Move to the left, they say to appeal to the Sanders/Stein crew and all will be well. Essentially, abandon the Rust Belt in favor of the West and Rockies.
This has been going on for years. Leftists long ago realized that Americans would never support them so they focused on importing voters who would. This is the path the NY Times should be taken.
All pretense of trying to win a majority of the white working class has been effectively jettisoned in favor of cementing a center-left coalition made up, on the one hand, of voters who have gotten ahead on the basis of educational attainment — professors, artists, designers, editors, human resources managers, lawyers, librarians, social workers, teachers and therapists — and a second, substantial constituency of lower-income voters who are disproportionately African-American and Hispanic.
Notice the income inequality of the two groups. Obama is fine with income inequality.
Rep. Keith Ellison (Minn.) has the edge over former Labor secretary Tom Perez in The Hill’s new survey of DNC members. But while both men claim they are close to securing commitments from the majority of the 447 voting members, neither candidate is assured victory.
'When failure is not enough, go for superfailure'.
I am one of the ones who jumped from the Democratic Party and voted Trump . Let's face it The Dems were out there pandering to different minorities and ignoring us loyal working class voters. They showed no interest in working America. If Trump comes through with his promises why would I go back to a party that does not offer me anything?
