It's more than "just being mean"-it's doing the JOB of the executive branch. Which is enforcing the law. Guess what? Weed is still illegal at the federal level. I think that's stupid and a waste of money to try to enforce pot laws. But the problem isn't the fact that he is doing his job-it is that such a law exists in the first place. The easy solution? Convince congress to change the law. Which IS their job.
But hey, what fun are facts when you're just looking for an excuse to bash Trump.
Nobody has to look for an excuse to bash Trump. He hands us reasons on a silver platter almost every day.
Such a gigantic waste of resources and time to go after this.
If Trump were a normal politician, he would probably do as Obama did - look at the changing opinion of the american public, and realize that the more intelligent course of action is to not **** off so many people. He would also have reined in his drug warrior AG.
But then Trump isn't a normal politician, is he?
The only comfort I can see is that this is the last gasp for drug warriors. That will be small comfort to the ordinary people who will get caught up in this.
My bigger picture view is pretty simple: The governments in the United States (be it federal, state or local) need to decide whether it is the duty of government to protect people from themselves.
If the answer is, "Yes!" then we need to reinstitute Prohibition, ban tobacco and outlaw every recreational human activity that is inherently dangerous to the health and well-being of participants. Skydiving, rock/mountain climbing, competitive sports ... you have to look at all of these things and countless others. If anyone ever gets hurt, you then by this ideology you need to at least strongly consider banning it.
If the answer is, "No!" then if a junkie wants to wreck himself or herself on heroine and isn't hurting or endangering anyone else, then they get to do that.
Beautiful post. I might have to steal this if you dont mind
That's not quite a 'fact' there are thousands of laws that are not enforced for a number of reasons. Please don't act like this is some noble act of this dysfunctional administration because it's not. My guess is that this is a big wet kiss to Jeff Sessions who says that "good people don't smoke marijuana", in all likelihood it's probably a quid pro quo in which Sessions has promised that DOJ won't prosecute Trump for his Russian connections if he gets to go after all those awful pot smokers.
And no one needs to look for an excuse to bash Trump, he creates new reasons every single day without any help, his ability to continue committing unforced errors is just amazing.
Trump tried to bury an intelligence report that found no evidence of extra threat posed by travel-ban nations & intelligence agencies are disturbed that Trump demands a report that fits his conclusions rather than let the conclusions be drawn from the evidence. WH request for report to back travel ban prompts dissent, concern among some intel officials - CNNPolitics.com
Cute try at deflection, but it's really not working. Weed, like criminal immigration, is illegal via federal laws. The job of the executive branch is actually to enforce the law, not make laws or decide to ignore ones that the president doesn't like. Yes, I know that with 8 years of Obama (not to mention Bush and the rapist) it's been a while since we had a president that actually does his job.
Don't like pot laws? Why weren't they repealed when President Choom Gang was in office and Dems held control of both the house and senate? Would have been a simple matter.
BTW, the poll is flawed. "Legalize nationally" (repealing federal pot laws) is the same as "letting the states decide". States can always pass laws that are more restrictive than federal ones. Look at gun laws in CA or NY as just one example.

This....
Individual freedoms as long they are not hurting anyone else.
PS> Hemp was this nations cash crop and in many ways superior to cotton before the ban.
Such a gigantic waste of resources and time to go after this.
There's one reason why it definitely will happen. DEA enlists the aid of local law enforcement and gets them to obtain the search warrants and raid dispensaries because they let the local agencies keep the money through asset forfeiture laws even if there is no conviction. They get the cash from the dispensaries, the furniture, the owner's vehicles- everything. It's so disgusting, it's like watching a police action in a banana republic. Here's some info on a raid that occurred in 2016 AFTER Congress enacted legislation prohibiting enforcement marijuana laws in states where marijuana was legal.
Supposedly Trump is not going to go after medical marijuana, just recreational. But how will DEA know which dispensary or grower is involved in MM rather than recreational? My guess is they go after all of them. Most of the DEA agents I've met are overzealous prohibitionists who think they are doing 'God's work' when they arrest people for victimless crimes. That is one agency that should be permanently eliminated!
I am glad. I live in Colorado and ever since it was legalized you constantly see bums and all other skeevy kinds loitering around smoking that crap.
