Remember when he sent a team to Africa to investigate Obama's birth certificate, and said "you would not believe what they are finding"? Still waiting.
That doesn't mean the wiretap was on Trump's communications. It could have been on someone else (like say, Mike Flynn's) devices. Also, it's been reported before that they monitor all communications that the Russian diplomatic staff have within the US. This happens both ways, that's why the new US Embassy in Moscow had to be rebuilt - to limit the risk of Russian counter-espionage actions.
