Jeff Sessions says he'll punish sanctuaries, cities could lose billions of dollars - Washington Times

Looking forward to it to Attorney General Sessions implementing this. He is a good, honorable man who is an impeccable stewart of the rule of law.

The largest sanctuary city with the highest per-capita rate of undocumented immigrants also had a spate of crime.

Just one weekend in sanctuary city Santa Ana. The mayor himself is from Mexico City, so of course they decided to make the city of sanctuary city.

This is the typical weekend in a sanctuary city. This is exactly why Jeff Sessions wants to cut federal funds to sanctuary cities.

Can't wait until these sanctuary cities have to raise their already high taxes or layoff more police officers because they harbor criminals and refuse to enforce federal laws.

The mayor and city council in these cities are doing nothing more but harboring criminals and it would be wonderful if they have drastic federal funding cuts.

I pray that Jeff Sessions plans are enforced and these sanctuary cities lose billions of federal dollars.

Cut them off. They must like the higher crime and cost of social services we provide.

umm..he didn't do anything new, that policy was put in place by Obama, he just didn't enforce it because it's really tough to punish jails for not following a law that federal courts have deemed unconstitutional. From your article:

"The National Sheriffs’ Association said it was looking for a clearer policy statement from Mr. Sessions.
“Until the Department of Justice issues legal guidance confirming the constitutionality of current detainers, sheriffs will remain exposed to legal and ethical ramifications,” Jonathan Thompson, executive director of the association, said last week."

ICE needs to give detainers the force of law, either by providing probable cause or having warrants issued by a judge, until they do that I don't think the courts will allow Sessions to cut grants because they refuse to comply with Trump's EO because:

"Law enforcement agencies, however, are not legally required to honor detainers. “Immigration detainers do not and cannot compel a state or local law enforcement agency to detain suspected aliens subject to removal.” Galarza v. Szalczyk, 745 F.3d 634, 636 (3d Cir. 2014); see also Miranda-Olivares v. Clackamas Cty., No. 3:12-CV-02317-ST, 2014 WL 1414305, at **3, 6-8 (D. Or. Apr. 11, 2014). See also Attorney General Bulletin No. 2012-DLE-01, “Responsibilities of Local Law Enforcement Agencies under Secure Communities.” (December 4, 2012), confirming that federal detainers are requests, not commands, to local law enforcement agencies." So..my guess is that Trump will lose this in Federal Court and it will be another big Trump Nothing Burger

cool story bro, i am glad Sessions gave you a bump for the day, but i hope you understand He will be dragged over the coals by the courts should he seek to "punish".

You really need to read up on this stuff, no court will allow him to punish a city in one area for failure to comply in another. Sessions already knows this, he is talking tough to pander to Trump's floundering supporters and he doing it to "big up" his rep.

The moment he denies funding for a road, he begins a pattern that will be as easy as pie to prove. You guys still dont get it. This is exactly why we have the 3 branches, to stop abuse and overreach. Just look up the cases over the last few decades both side have run to the judicial branch when the other side went too far.

If some city refuse to comply then Sessions will need to try to SUE them, using what powers he has.

really guys there is a reason cities like Seattle are openly bating Sessions, they WANT him to try, otherwise they would just do it on the down low.

but enjoy it anyway, you can tell your mates it is true, and they will have forgotten you said it, by the time Sessions is on the stand, trying to deny he threatened revenge/punishments...

Exactly. The only money that Sessions can withhold from these municipalities are grants through 3 programs that already require sanctuary certification - so money they may not be getting now.

He can't withhold highway or school funds from them.
