540 billion dollars sounds like, and is, a lot. Of course, my property taxes here in Fort Worth keep increasing, in part due to the tax I pay for the county hospital, where those with no health insurance go to be treated for everything from headaches (sometimes resulting in a MRI scan), to Hepatitis.

Yet, all is not lost. According to this article in 2016 the total value of homes in the USA was 29.6 trillion dollars:

Long Island, where I live, has some of the highest property taxes in the country. I'd guess for a 500K home the average must be around 12K/year.

In my town they're abut 25% lower because they're offset by industry there.

I don't mind paying what I do because I'm overall really happy with the school system and the libraries. Garbage collection and recycling are really good too.

Private school would probably cost 30-40K/year for us.

My son will graduate in a few more years and I'll re-think my location.

If you want to buy a house, and real estate is too expensive where you live, then move to a location where real estate is less expensive.

If property taxes are too high where you live, then move to a location with lower property taxes.

Well in mob parlance property taxes are known as a street tax or protection money. Same racket, different terminology.

Total taxes is a meaningless statistic.

What matters is taxes per person or per household.

Theres this thing called a job... It trades money for your time to perform tasks. Thats called work. Try it. You'll be amazed at what it can do to your wallet.
Tip-the more proficient you are at certain tasks, and trades, yeilds more money earned... The more skills you have the better off you will be... Those are called Skills. Those are things colleges don't teach much any more without adding sjw fluff classes to them.

No. Total taxes show revenue collected... Taxes per household will vary.
Income varies does it not?
Property values vary, do they not?
Services per town/city-county-state vary, do they not?

I paid 100 per month for refuse services back in NY where my school and property taxes combined were 4800 per year... Down here in Florida house hold garbage, yard waste, and recycleable collection is provided in taxes... And combined school and property taxes are $1600 per year WITH a break down showing how much money goes where...

Unless you're in favor of a flat tax that should be applied to everyone... Then you'll have major issues if you seek to make everyone pay the exact same amount. Say a burger flipper at McDonald's vs the Ceo at a major corporation. 15-20k per year paying the same as someone making 150-200k or 1.5-2 million per year or 10.5-20 million per year and so on. Because if everyone were to pay the exact same amount in tax, those Wal-Mart and fast food employees would be screwed faster than a hooker on 2 dollar tuesdays...

What is the tax per household? That's what effects people. Total property tax revenue can go up for many reasons. It can be an increase in tax, but it can also be an increase in property owners.
