Actually, we don't - and that's why California has long had more stringent emissions controls standards for vehicles because we had terrible smog in SoCal back in the 1960s. Thanks to that our air quality has improved over the last several decades.

Anyway thank you for clearly demonstrating your clear command of logical fallacies.

On October 7, 2003, Davis was recalled with 55.4% of the votes in favor of the recall and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected to replace him as governor. The Bay Area and Los Angeles County were the only regions in California to vote no on the recall.

My problem with this is that it's a very regressive tax. Before leaving the country I worked in California and most car owners there aren't wealthy Silicon Valley magnates- they're working class folks who need the cars to make a living with their small businesses. But because of California's terrible public transportation and widely spread land, the car was essential to survive even for the poorest people. When taxes have been needed for services, other states have been smarter by issuing luxury taxes or some taxes on the billionaires, and California has no shortage of this. The massive increase in gas tax on top of already expensive gas and vehicle charges is going to hit the poorest Californians hardest, which is going to reduce spending and hurt the economy, while driving businesses out of the state. Maybe good intentions but not well thought through at all.

It's 12 cents a gallon, that's no huge by any stretch of the imagination. With Trump screwing around in the middle east there's a real chance that gas will be over $4 a gallon in a few months. Are you going to devote this much energy to complaining about that, because that will hurt lower income people much more than 12 cents a gallon.. or are you, as usual just going to blame democrats?

A 20 percent increase in gas prices—means that spending on other things needs to fall by about 1 percent.

You can check the CPI for 2007-2008 and see for yourself which prices increased due to a $1 bump in the cost of a gallon of gas.
You are aware of "fuel surcharges" that are tacked on right? Very common now even though fuel prices are fairly low...
Don't raise the price of the product, just add/raise the surcharge.

I would guess that the clunker cars that poor folks drive would be more susceptible to damage from bad roads and bridges than rich people's cars.

Conservatives don't want poor folks to miss work because their car is in the shop, right?

Trump "screwing around in the Middle East" is a direct consequence of the Obama regime's completely failed Middle East policy.

So yes, Democrats are to blame for that, as well as this abusive and regressive tax that punishes poor and working Americans.

Keep the comments coming about how a 12 cent tax is going to wreck the economy.

I lived in California for a short time about ten years ago.

It seemed like a state that mainly served the interests of elites, while claiming to be liberal/progressive. Ultra-high gas taxes and ultra-low property taxes...need I say more?

CA may be liberal on social issues, but it is downright medieval on economic issues. They've rebuilt medieval Europe, complete with a huge underclass that can't afford to buy land and will live as renter serfs for their whole lives.
