California Secession Advocate Faces Scrutiny Over Where He’s Based: Russia

Louis J. Marinelli, the 30-year-old English teacher who is the president of the Yes California movement, which seeks independence for the state, has decided to call it home.

...
And back in California, he is on the defensive for accepting travel expenses and office space from a Kremlin-linked nationalist group. That acceptance has raised the prospect that Russia, after meddling in the election to try to tip the vote to Mr. Trump, as United States intelligence agencies have said, is now gleefully stoking divisions in America by backing a radical liberal movement.

Well... the roots of secession lead to Russia. Imagine that.

The saying is true... you point the finger at someone else, you have three pointing back at you.

Check out this paragraph near the end of the article...

While no indications exist of a direct Russian government hand in Mr. Marinelli’s organization, a group that is nominally independent but nonetheless state financed, and supports only causes that dovetail with the Kremlin’s foreign policy, paid for a hotel room in Moscow during a congress of secessionist groups from around the world in September 2016. These included the Texas Nationalist Movement, backers of Puerto Rican independence and a group wanting to restore the Hawaiian monarchy. A Russian group, known as the Anti-Globalization Movement, which like Mr. Marinelli advocates the breakup of the United States, also offered him office space in Moscow to open an “embassy” of California in Russia, and Mr. Marinelli accepted.

We have all of these people hounding Trump's people for Russian connections. Is anyone looking at secession efforts as a tool of Russia for weakening the United States?

Um, you guys are very cozy with Russia and Putin right now and you hate California. Sounds like you should love this article. I absolutely support the split of the US into at least 2 countries.

Sounds like you want what Russia wants. I want CA to have some sense of normal American values. They don't have to be Texas, but they are off the deep end right now.

The article caught me off guard, but after I thought about it - why wouldn't Russia want a weaker America.

No is Cozy with Russia. The left continues fake news and make up lies. Obama had no respect from Russia, but with Trump there is respect thru strength. Big Difference.
CA. has talked trash on this separation issue since Trump took office and now Trump is expecting Ca. to enforce the laws of our Nation.

There is a partial truth if a nation is chipped away it will become weaker.

Californian would instantly be taken over by the Feds and the truth is most of California is owned and controlled by the US Federal Gov.

There is no proof of that except for made fake news pieces.

super Powers should have a mutual respect for each other just to prevent war on a global scale.

Berkeley Liberals have no clue and they refuse to follow the laws of this country.

The same can be said about being Hypocritical Liberals.

Define American values, and why does your claim of what those values are carry more weight than anyone elses? The worst states in the country are those who constantly brag about their so called "values", yet always contradict them.

Of course they want a weaker America. So why are you so buddy buddy with them all of sudden? They have never cared about America. You really think they do now?

Haha stop changing facts-Russia and Trump are BFFs and Mike Flynn resigned because of it. The entire country except Trump's fanatical supporters know it.

You spent 7 years investigating Benghazi-why doesnt Chaffetz/Gowdy do their job now?
Answer: They are Hypocrites.

Oh and open ur trap to Berkeley when you do more to keep this country great than Berkeley-otherwise save it.

I know you want to change the topic...

The fact is here is a real link to someone with Russian interests, who has a Russian national as a wife, who is linked to and supported by a Russian group seeking to break apart the nation and has opened up a Calexit embassy in Moscow - and you want to focus on a bogus Trump story with no real evidence.

‘Calexit’: Yes California movement opens ‘embassy’ in Moscow
The movement, Yes California, is hoping for a “Calexit” break from the US. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Louis Marinelli, leader of the movement, said the embassy will not deal with diplomatic issues, but will act as more of a cultural center that will educate Russians about California's history, boost trade ties and promote tourism.
Now why would Russia be interested promoting California trade and tourism? I think they are looking at taking California over down the road. Why else would Russia do this?

Here's some more info from Sep 2016...

Texas, California Separatists Attend Kremlin-Funded Conference
The conference, now in its second year, is funded largely by the Kremlin and organized by the Anti-Globalization Movement of Russia, a group that closely follows government positions. The movement says it is unconnected to the Kremlin, but the hotel conference was almost entirely paid for by a charitable fund founded by President Vladimir Putin, which provided close to $546,000 for the project, according to public records. The attendees, including the Texan delegate, had been offered free flights and accommodation.

The conference’s organizers present it as a platform for marginalized groups, but its agenda overlaps with Kremlin efforts to promote Russia as an alternative guardian for global order, at the head of democratic movement opposed to alleged American imperialism.
