German electricity network scrambles the Blackout

Due to a long phase without sufficient wind and sun, the German power grid has come under pressure in January according to data from the IG BCE. The union is fighting for the continuation of conventional power plants.

...
A thick cloud cover lay over the north. The sun seldom broke through. In addition, there was a phase of windstill. "The dark economy" calls this the energy industry. A dangerous state for the electricity grid, Germany is increasingly focusing on wind power and solar power as a result of the energy demand.

...
Despite the problems, the Germans demanded more than 80 gigawatts of power, as on other days. "The renewables could not even offer five percent," said Vassiliadis.

Europe has already committed a bunch of subsidy money to green energy projects, and there are plans to shut down around 30 conventional energy plants in the next 3 years. They may want to rethink that.
not nearly as big a deal as you are making out.

the Eu grid needs work to support green power, they are getting there and will continue to improve it in many ways, storage is a big one and they are working on it. And of course routing power between countries still needs work

Why are some people treating this as an either/or question?

" Cold, Gray Winters "
Lots of comfort when there is a three supply of coal out behind the power plant.

Coal is dying. No longer competitive. And attempts to clean it up just make the cost problem worse. Any expansion or replacement of fossil is going to be natural gas.

PV solar shows signs of becoming so cheap you will duplicate all fossil fuel plants and run PV solar whenever possible.

The east needs some massive new distribution lines to get the cheaper and cheaper wind power from the midwest to the population centers. ONe of the nice things about PV solar is that it can be sited where there is already ties to distribution. ONe of the reasons for the growth of solar in eastern CA and NV is the power distribution tie to S. CA.

Coal is nowhere near dead (globally). In fact most of the world gets it's electricity from coal.

What substandard system have you been forced into?

Its dying in high tech developed countries. And as other countries become more high tech, its dying there too.

Coal is third world.

I know, sorry for using those "trigger words"...

I think it is rather ironic how the 'hippies" march in support to dump fossil fuels yet they would be the first ones to flip out and scurry to their safe zones if their apple phones stopped working due to a black out like they had in Germany.
solar has come a long way, and needs less ambient light, so cloudy days are not so big of a deal like it was in the 1970's huge low efficient solar panels

asto the back up ...instead of fossil fuel.... use nuclear...

France is about the size of Texas, but has nearly the same amount of nuclear power plants as the USA (58 in France to the 99 in the USA)(and of the 99 in the USA 12 are owned/operated by the military (some are floating (Navy)))

build SMALL nuclear power plants with high safety

and revise the Carter era law about recycling the nuclear rods, we could recycle like almost every other country that has nuclear too

nuclear is far safer and cleaner than carbon fossil fuel
