That means that in Maryland, a woman who conceives after a rape will still be legally required to negotiate with her rapist over custody should she decide to keep the baby, or include her rapist in any decisions regarding putting the baby up for adoption.
This is pretty atrocious to still be a thing. If the man is convicted of rape, he should not be allowed any sort of custody or further intrusion into his victim's life.

Sincerely hoping that this is a bipartisan position...

I don't think fathers accused, or even convicted, of rape should automatically lose their parental rights but it should be a serious and credible reason to terminate those rights, with the "rights" of the father weighed against the safety of the mother. That hearing should also be put on the fast track and if the decision is made to grant the father parental rights it should come with a very strict no-contact of the mother order, supervised visits, third party supervised custody exchange, neutral location (preferably local police station) exchange, and child support. The address, phone number, and any other information about the mother should be kept confidential.

False charges of rape have happened to force automatic parental termination.

That's if she decides to keep the child. If she were to make the decision to have the child but adopt out... he is legally allowed to fight against the adoption and gain full custody. Which means that the rapist's victim will be shelling out child support money to her rapist. Every month. For at least 18 years.

And that doesn't sit well with me at all.

I personally don't believe a Rapist is a "father". Rape is often about Power, many men believe they should have power over women/girls. The committee that failed to get this law to a vote was composed of 6 Men, zero women. They have no problem with a Rapist continuing to have Power over their Victim.

Go figure
