If my kid came home and told me a teacher had said that to a class full of 7th graders without any other qualifiers at all, that teacher would be hearing from me.
That "experiment" was more like "pop psychology."
Ugh. No room for it in education.
As for whether kids without smart phones are or are not problem solvers and kids with them aren't or are problem solvers, I'd say it depends entirely on the kid and their home environment.
All mine had cell phones at young ages, and are quite inquisitive human beings.
