Exactly! I can think of one totalitarian government, which dictated that people deemed to be of a certain race, were no longer allowed to write for people outside their own race. Eventually, those people were outlawed, entirely, and shipped-off for "relocation" (which was code for EXTERMINATION).

Seems to me, white authors are gradually - bit-by-bit - being silenced. That's a pity, since the most eloquent and sympathetic literature about us brown people, has been written by white people. Through their literature, they've made the rest of us look far kinder, smarter, and nicer, than we really are.

Gloria, you came very near to describing real events in American history:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_of_Tears

I just can't wrap my head around the idea that there can be liberal fiction and conservative fiction.

The only way people will silence me is by not buying my novel, if I even succeed in getting it published.

Woah! If that's the case how could literature change so quickly since I took the classes myself?

Are we re-writing literature now, perhaps as we re-write history to become more politically correct?

Just what the hell are they teaching in schools today? Micro-aggressions 101? How to cry alt-left style?

Jeez. Give my fiction. I'll create the worlds I like and eschew the mess our real world has created.

There's a reason people enjoy fiction: escape. Escape from all the BS of real life. If I wanted real life I'd watch the fake news.
Literature suppression really knows no political ideology. Books get suppressed both from the left and the right - - it depends on what issue the book has. Republicans have had problems with Death of a Salesman and Johnny Get His Gun and Democrats have had problems with Huck Finn (including, famously, creating a version where the "n" word was replaced every time with "slave") and Nat Turner. Hell, even Fahrenheit 451 has been suppressed - - the irony of ironies!

Oh gawd, tell me it isn't true! Jeez, I love your response!

I recall Bradbury's Farenheit 451 well! For those not in the know, 451°F is the temperature that paper burns at. The whole concept of the novel was the government was burning books that were non-PC.

Interestingly, I read Orwell's 1984 before 1984! Or maybe not interesting, you pick.

It's interesting that yesterday's political fiction becomes today's warped politics, just as yesterday's SF has become today's science.

I used to love SF. SF is no fun now. Men travel to the moon? Been there, done that. That's why I have targeted urban {maybe romantic} fantasy as my genre. I'm pretty sure we won't see any vampires or werewolves in my lifetime.

Incidentally it is a very popular genre, e.g. True Blood (AKA Sookie Stackhouse) or Game of Thrones TV series. The latter is of course fantasy but not urban fantasy. In fact I call GOT medieval fantasy.

To steal from liberal king of night shows, Bill Maher, these people are complaining about "cultural appropriation" when they live in a "melting pot". I thought they wanted diversity. Clearly not.

The left still not understanding why Trump won.

I am reminded of author Diana Gabaldon describing an event where she was seated with a group of fans who were discussing one of her characters, sexual sadist Jack Randall, in which she relates that she is amused that they do not realize that she is Jack Randall.

Gabaldon is an amazing writer, and she writes from the points of view of male and female, multiple ethnicities, and ages from children to the geriatric set.

If an author cannot do that well, the book will not sell.

Didn't see anything about any sort of fiction being forbidden.

Just a bunch of 21st century hoop-la over nothing really IMO.

And FWIW I am an avid reader and have read a lot of books by authors who wrote about different cultures/peoples. All people are people and one of the things I love the most about fiction in particular is the fact that there are universal truths in good literature about humanity and how we are all basically the same as we have very similar experiences, wants, needs, and feelings, in life.

Only thing I took from this article that may be an issue in Canada (and I'm not Canadian so wouldn't be able to say for sure) is that the indigenous author stated that people of color in Canada who are authors are not offered publishing rights over a white author there.

On that though, I'd say that in today's world, people can self publish and that the indigenous population should take a page out of black American history and publish their own pieces in their own journals and create publishing houses, if they so desire to go out and market those works.

For America, I don't see this as an issue, but honestly, I do feel we have less racism in this country versus other countries (whether liberal or conservative) because race has always been at the forefront of politics in this nation and this is not necessarily so in other countries like Canada and Australia.

ITA with the bold.

I know quite a few conservative Christians in particular who hate the Harry Potter books and want them out of school libraries.

I also remember when I was in high school some parents tried to ban "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker.

We just need to do what Sen. Bullworth suggested.......

All we need is a voluntary, free-spirited, open-ended program of procreative racial deconstruction. Everybody just gotta keep ****in' everybody 'til they're all the same color.

What do you think they are trying to do right now? Why do you think that the alt right is rising? Because they want to protect their heritage.

The better answer is: Everyone needs to gtf over themselves and race.
