that public service job may not pay off after all. regardless, a promise made should be kept.

Quote:
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program promises to cancel any remaining student debt for those who work for the government or nonprofits if they have been making on-time payments for 10 years. Many teachers, public defenders, Peace Corps workers, and law enforcement officers fit the qualifications.
-----
The program could cost the government more than originally expected, according to the Government Accountability Office. The Obama Administration had proposed capping the amount borrowers could have forgiven at $57,500, but that proposal was never was approved and forgiveness remains unlimited.

The median borrower in the program has more than $60,000 in student debt and almost 30% of them have more than $100,000 in debt, according to a Brookings report.
400,000 were promised student loan forgiveness. Now they are panicking - May. 18, 2017

if they have not yet signed up and if they took the "risk" of planning without certainity they have nobody to blame but themselves..

one needs to hedge. You plan for both events, it continuing and it not doing so. You should not place all your eggs in one basket. it really is something their parents should have guided them on.

I would add the best way for the gov to handle this would be to phase it out. over the course of a number of years. they is how this sort of thing is normally done. drop the % covered over maybe 3 or 4 years to zero.

I agree, but the ones who have signed up should be covered. and there should have been a cap on the total amount in the first place.

I don't feel sorry for people that owe loans. Go to community college for two years. Then go to state for the last two. Work while in college. The loans will be small. Or go private and have huge loans. Either way you owe the money and you should pay it back!
