Bad article. Trump doesn't want to get rid of NATO. He just wants the Europeans, who have most to benefit, to pay more. They need us more than we need them. Trump knows how to negotiate..

Conceivably, the Europeans can say "Screw Trump and America, we don't need NATO or America." That would be the end of NATO.

However, is that so bad if they so choose?

Trump believes NATO members should pay their dues. NATO is weaker due to members who don't fund it as promised.

It so amazing how many people, i.e.conservatives, have no sense of history or a sense of global politics. They are willing to follow a man who is devoid of any type of knowledge or insight in this area and who has as a key advisor, Stephen Bannon, who has says he wants to bring down the established system.

They do so without a single thought as to what follows.

It is what used to be called irresponsible. We now call it conservatism.

This is from last year -- Trump did suggest that the NATO countries that didn't 'pay what they owe' (which is not right -- they don't owe anything).....would not get any support from the US if needed....which is in fact disbanding NATO.

It's all in context.

But folks still don't get it.

There isn't a bill that is presented and owed to NATO.

NATO Countries have agreed that all countries should try to work towards a military defense budget of 2% of each country's GDP.

It is a guideline not a bill.

There are no NATO DUES.

And while some countries don't have the finances to spend 2% of GDP on military defense....their location is a huge asset and the fact they are in NATO works in the US favor (Iceland for example).

The USA was insistent that Iceland join NATO because of Iceland's favorable location...not because they needed any money Iceland had to offer.

t isn't about putting a dollar figure...it's what does a nation have that will work in everyone's favor against the Russians, the Chinese, or the terrorists.

NATO doesn't hold any of the money that other countries put in their defense budget.

It does not make NATO weaker necessarily.

You don't understand how NATO works that is obvious and Trump uses that ignorance to his advantage.
