True in certain areas. But a vast amount of deforestation occurs in the tropics, like, Brazil where the rain forest, after a short reprieve, is once again being cut down for cattle ranches and palm oil. Palm oil is also a culprit in Indonesia.
Deforestation like every other environmental ill revolves around greed. Cheaper to dump toxins in the river or bay then to dispose of them safely. It is likewise more expedient to make a cheap buck from willy nilly destroying forests then having a responsible plan for environmental development.
I don't dispute what you write, but the irony is that once the areas are deforested, environmental catastrophe usually follows... landslides, floods, etc. Local governments need to do more.
