These chain restaurants used to be cheaper and the food was a little better but they have been declining in quality and too expensive for what they are. They used to just be a place to meet with friends and have a few drinks and a cheap dinner but now the bill is too high.
Local restaurants are iffy in many locations, they go in and out quickly even if they are good. It is a very tough business. I miss so many local establishments that have closed.
Pffft. Applebee's has disgusting, bland, overpriced food that has a disgustingly high sodium content. And the caloric content of their food is abhorrent. Somehow, they manage to steam 8g of fat and 260mg of sodium into broccoli??? Like. HOW.
Perhaps they should look at their business model and fix that.
If I wanted a bland meal an entire day's supply of calories, fat, and sodium, I'll get get a Bic Mac meal and spend a fraction of what Applebee's charges. Food quality and environment would be about the same. I think the only thing Applebee's has over McD's is booze.
What, you don't like "quirky" standardized interiors, servers using one the 5 corporate-approved greetings, microwaved appetizers and tasteless beer?
Don't forget fancy named, weak mixed drinks. That cost 8 dollars or more but only have one very small, measured, shot of booze in them and the rest of the glass is all fruit juice and ice. Quite often very common at any tourist trap area w/ chain restaurants. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice....

I actually do go to Wingstop sometimes. There's no way to cook them myself in my 200sf studio (with less than a foot of counter space combined and a super sensitive smoke alarm). Plus, my health freak husband would have a panic attack if he saw me actually deep frying something lol.
But the Wingstop is close to where I work, so if I'm craving wings, I get my fix during lunch hour.
The other chains? Nah. We eat out almost every day, but we prefer the local mom and pop ethnic joints.
My girls love Wingstop. They will drive 10+ miles out of the way just to go there when they are out.
I don't eat at those places because their food isn't great. What a bunch of malarkey that article is.
I'd rather eat at a local restaurant, too. Chains cut as many corners as fast food restaurants do - they're just good at convincing you that they're not.
All that said, entering the work force during the Great Recession taught me to eat most of my meals at home, and to bring lunch to work.
Yep, 2008 taught a lot of people how to cook off of tv and youtube. Most are still gun shy too. We make more than we ever have but rarely eat out because of some hardships in the early 2000 are still fresh in our heads.

Applebee's makes me think of a pre-fab Anytown USA - you pull off the freeway and there are the same gas stations, two chain motels, five fast-food places and a pharmacy. Big-box stores off a little in the distance. A seedy strip mall with a liquor store, a payday loan place and a massage parlor. And the upscale shopping and dining area with three chain restaurants and a dozen chain stores - an Old Navy, a Gap and a Foot Locker among them. Flickering neon and the hum of the freeway can never quite be escaped.
Just say no to People Chow.
